DETROIT, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Three women who have excelled in the
communications field will be recognized at the annual Women In
Communications (WIC) of Detroit's Matrix Awards at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9
at the Players Club, 3321 East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit. Tickets for the
gala are $50 for WIC members and $65 for non-members. Call RoseAnn Nicolai
at 248-582-8465 or e-mail roseann@nicolaievents.com for tickets and more
information.
Kim Walsh of Ferndale and director of Detroit Radio Information
Services (DRIS) will receive the Headliner Award recognizing her lifelong
achievements as a communicator. Since 1993, she has led DRIS to become a
leader among radio reading services -- filling an information void for
persons who are blind, visually-impaired or print-impaired. When strategic
planning showed a need to enlarge capacity to meet the information access
needs of aging baby boomers, Kim raised more than $200,000 toward a
capacity program so that DRIS' broadcast production operation could be
converted from a worn out analog technology to new digital technology. She
was able to do this despite continual budget cuts from government sources
and having to also raise general operating funds. She is currently in phase
II of the program raising money to focus on improving staffing and services
for DRIS. As an International Association of Audio Information Services
board member, Walsh has been a mentor in marketing and fund development for
individual stations throughout the United States and Canada. In addition,
Walsh has volunteered her communication skills to a number of community
organizations including the Detroit New Center Lions Club, Michigan
Literacy Inc. and the Council of Agencies Serving the Blind. She is a past
president of WIC of Detroit.
Cynthia Price of Bloomfield Hills and women diversity sales and
marketing manager for General Motors Corporation will receive the Vanguard
Award recognizing her for her innovative use of various communications
mediums to market to women. Under Price's leadership the website
gm.com/women was created to empower women with information about the
purchase and service process. To help drive traffic to the site, a Women
with Drive sweepstake was generated with instant-win opportunities. An
email re-contact program was established and six follow-up emails, authored
by women of GM, were sent with information about safety, new products and
fuel economy. In order to educate dealers on how to better market to women,
a series of market tip sheets, best practices DVD and toolkits were
developed. Additionally, a series of guides, Women in the Driver's Seat,
were produced focusing on buying, safety and service. E-decoders were
placed in the guides as a way to drive the women back to gm.com/women and
participate in the sweepstakes. To further market to women, Price was the
first woman to blog on GM's FastLane blog site. She appeared as the first
guest on "the Diversity Show," a new monthly program hosted by GM Diversity
Initiatives and delivered via satellite to GM employees and dealers in the
U.S. and Canada where she talked about the power of women consumers and
GM's initiatives of targeting this market.
Fara Warner of Ann Arbor will receive the Diamond Award for her use of
media to change how women are perceived and defined by business and
society. In her new book, "The Power of the Purse: How Smart Businesses are
Adapting to the World's Most Important Consumers-Women," Warner informs
marketers, business watchers and women themselves to women's immense
economic leverage and influence. Through nearly a dozen case studies she
examines how businesses achieved breakthrough results by changing the way
they reach women. Warner has written about marketing, advertising and
consumer trends, including many articles focusing on marketing to women,
for more than 15 years for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and
Fast Company. In addition, Warner raises awareness of women's economic
power by speaking to business groups and media around the world.
The evening strolling dinner and awards gala includes cocktails and a
silent auction. In addition, Margery Krevsky, CEO of Productions Plus in
Bingham Farms and Los Angeles, will take us on a fashion tour of auto show
talent showing how the use of models and what they wear has changed over
the years. Attendees will see stellar Bill Blass ball gowns, futuristic
costumes and sophisticated Escada suits. Krevsky's company books the
models, product specialists, aerial performers, celebrity cameo appearances
and escorts for robots, serving over seven car lines and contributing to 75
auto shows across the nation. Krevsky has been a longtime Women In
Communications member and was a past Diamond Award winner.
