CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling for swift
completion and minimal traffic restrictions, PennDOT Engineering District 10
in Indiana, PA today awarded a five-day, $117,000 emergency contract for the
immediate replacement of a wing wall that collapsed Friday, April 9, under
busy Route 19 in Cranberry Township, Butler County. The wing wall was part of
the bridge that carries Route 19 over ramps to and from the Cranberry toll
plaza of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Transportation Secretary Bradley L. Mallory on Tuesday authorized the use
of emergency funds for the wing wall replacement project. The wing wall will
be replaced by a retaining wall, 16-1/2 feet high and 20 feet long, consisting
of steel I-beams set approximately five feet deep into underlying rock with
wood lagging between each beam.
Upon This Rock Construction Inc., of Mercer, PA had the lowest of five
bids received and will start the repair work 9 a.m., tomorrow, April 15. The
emergency contract requires all work to be completed by 7 a.m. Wednesday,
April 21.
PennDOT says Route 19 traffic will remain unrestricted during
construction. To maintain access to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, PennDOT will
alternate two-directional traffic on the turnpike ramps. The Turnpike ramp
restriction will be in place after the morning rush hour tomorrow, and will be
suspended between 7 and 9 a.m. each weekday until the construction is
completed. Restrictions will be removed during the weekend when traffic
demands are highest.
Motorists in the area are urged to drive with caution throughout the work
area and be alert to the presence of construction workers and their equipment.
