net.com Announces Release 3.0 of the SCREAM Broadband Services Platform

Next Generation Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) Lets Carriers
Commoditize Broadband Deployments Without Compromising on Services

    FREMONT, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- net.com (NYSE: NWK)
today announced the general availability of release 3.0 of the SCREAM
broadband services platform. SCREAM 3.0 is a next generation broadband remote
access server (BRAS) with industry leading quality of service (QoS)
capabilities ideal for carriers looking to deliver a "triple play" of voice,
video and data over IP.
As DSL (digital subscriber line) service prices continue to decline,
carriers are under continuous pressure to lower operational and capital
expenses. The SCREAM platform lowers the cost of delivering DSL services by
integrating an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switch with the BRAS function.
This reduces the number of ATM switches that carriers need to deploy for both
DSL and private line services. SCREAM also offers IP and MPLS (multi-protocol
label switching) network backhaul capabilities, thus reducing the number of
ATM resources required to route traffic to wholesale and retail internet
service providers (ISPs), and allows carriers to leverage the cost
effectiveness of packet back-haul transport.
As one of the few Cisco IOS licensees in the world, net.com now has the
IOS routing engine running on SCREAM 3.0. Because the IOS command line
interface (CLI) is exposed, existing element or network management systems, as
well as Cisco Certified Network Engineers (CCNEs), are able to readily
configure the latest SCREAM release. This offers a tremendous advantage to
network operators with large investments in Cisco equipment because it
dramatically lowers the operational costs for deploying the SCREAM platform.
"SCREAM is poised to become a serious competitor in the world of broadband
access and service delivery," said Ron Westfall, principle analyst with
Current Analysis. "With the core BRAS functionality complete in release 3.0,
net.com can now set its sights on delivering the triple play service
architecture. New service creation is going to be the next battlefield
for carriers, and the SCREAM platform, with advanced QoS functionality,
has an advantage in delivering voice and video over IP per the DSL Forum's
TR-59 service architecture."
The SCREAM family is comprised of two products. SCREAM 100 is for larger
central office deployments where capacity and density is critical. The SCREAM
50 is designed for smaller central offices and edge deployments where low
density and cost effective subscriber aggregation is key.
The SCREAM 100 platform comes with advanced redundancy options that
provide zero operational down time. Coupled with net.com's award winning
service and support organization, including on-site service, hot sparing and
7x24 telephone support, SCREAM 3.0 delivers non-stop broadband to service
providers expecting a world class solution for broadband subscriber
management.
