Paradigm Strengthens Human Health Unit Through Key Appointments In Medical Informatics and Computational Biology

Industry Expert Michael Liebman Appointed to Scientific Advisory Board
And Brian Bullard Hired as Senior Director of Computational Systems Biology

    RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Paradigm Genetics, Inc. (Nasdaq: PDGM) today announced that Michael
Liebman, Ph.D., has been appointed to the company's Scientific Advisory Board
(SAB). Dr. Liebman is the Director of Biomedical Informatics at the Abramson
Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Paradigm also announced the appointment of Brian
R. Bullard as Senior Director of Computational Systems Biology. Mr. Bullard
will report to Thomas Colatsky, Ph.D., Vice President, Healthcare Research and
leverage his more than seventeen years of experience in information
technology, bioinformatics and computational analysis to facilitate the
discovery of novel biomarkers and drug targets, which could be commercialized
by Paradigm or its partners.
"The high caliber of these two appointments is indicative of the progress
we've made in our human health endeavors. They provide us with strategic
insight and experience to continue building our Human Health unit, which has
now grown to more than 45 dedicated R&D professionals," said Heiri Gugger,
President and CEO of Paradigm Genetics. "Michael Liebman, our newest SAB
member, brings a wealth of knowledge in clinical and experimental medicine
from both pharma and academia. Brian Bullard's appointment further strengthens
our expertise in data integration and data coherence, an integral part of our
systems biology approach to developing more predictive diagnostics and safer,
more effective therapeutics."
Dr. Liebman is a very accomplished and well-known scientist in the field
of genomics and bioinformatics, with more than twenty-five years' industry and
academic experience. He has held senior positions with Roche Biosciences
(Global Head of Computational Genetics), Wyeth-Ayerst (Director of Biomedical
Informatics and Pharmacogenomics), and Vysis, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Amoco Technology (Director of Bioinformatics and Genomics). He is also
currently Chief Scientific Officer of ProSanos(TM), a privately held medical
informatics company delivering computational products and services to the
pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Liebman's research has focused on the development
of clinical data systems, the modeling of disease progression, and the mining
of pharmacogenomic data in the discovery of disease markers.
Mr. Bullard, prior to joining Paradigm, served as Vice President,
Informatics at Morphochem Inc., where he was responsible for integration of
the company's existing chemo-informatics database with its genomics
initiative. He was also responsible for initiating statistical-based
approaches to data acceptance and decision-making in the drug discovery
process. Prior to that he was Vice President and Chief Information Officer at
AxCell Biosciences (a wholly owned subsidiary of Cytogen Corporation), where
he directed the company's IT and bioinformatic efforts in proteomics. He has
held senior management positions with PE Informatics (Manager of Data
Products), Gene Logic (Director of Bioinformatics Development) and Science and
Technology Corporation (Principal Investigator and Systems Analyst). Mr.
Bullard's work has focused on providing complete bioinformatics solutions,
complex data analysis and scientific software development, and on the
application and commercialization of these tools for drug discovery and
biotechnology.
