    ATLANTA, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Armin G. Brecher, Chair of the Firm's
Board of Partners and of the Firm's Executive Committee, announced that the
Firm has "enhanced its commitment to broaden pro bono work in the communities
in which it has offices. We have partnered with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society
and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer Foundation in Atlanta, and with the DC Bar
Pro Bono Program and the Whitman Walker Clinic to expand our participation in
pro bono matters."
At Firm luncheon meetings held simultaneously in Atlanta and Washington
yesterday, former Governor Roy Barnes, who is currently volunteering with the
Atlanta Legal Aid Society, gave the keynote address in Atlanta, expressing his
commitment to the pro bono practice. Also attending the Atlanta lunch and
making presentations were Steve Gottlieb, Executive Director of the Atlanta
Legal Aid Society, along with other staff lawyers from his office, and Marty
Ellin, Executive Director of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation.
At the Washington luncheon, Rob Falk, the General Counsel and Jodi Feldman
of the Whitman Walker Clinic, and Mark Herzog, Deborah Austin and Margaret
Duval with the DC Bar Pro Bono Program gave examples of the many projects Firm
attorneys handled during the past year and how lawyers could become more
involved.
Last year the Firm announced its first pro bono fellowship in honor of
esteemed Atlanta attorney John Marshall. Ron Gaither, an associate of Powell
Goldstein was the first recipient of the fellowship and served for six months
with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Mr. Gaither followed the Governor's
speech with examples from his experience at Atlanta Legal Aid during the past
six months. The Firm also announced the adoption of a new policy giving
billable hour credit for up to 50 hours of approved pro bono work that applies
to all three levels of the Firm's associate productivity bonus eligibility.
Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy LLP announced during the luncheon
meetings that Paula M. Eldridge and Anie Elizabeth Wulkan have been selected
as the Firm's Pro Bono Lawyers of the Year for 2002. Ms. Eldridge practices
in the Firm's Atlanta office and is recognized for her work on the Wills for
Firefighters Project. Ms. Wulkan who is resident in the Firm's Washington
office is recognized for her work with the DC Bar Pro Bono Program and the
Human Rights Campaign.
Mr. Brecher commended the two lawyers on their commitments to these
projects and organizations. "Paula joined the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers
Foundation and others in responding to the terrible tragedy of September 11 by
developing and implementing a project to provide wills and estate planning
services on a pro bono basis to our community's firefighters. Under her
leadership, partners, associates, paralegals, summer associates and staff
members trained and worked together to meet the needs of our local firefighter
community."
Alan Parver, Managing Partner of the Firm's Washington office
congratulated Anie Wulkan on her work with the DC Bar Pro Bono Program and to
the Human Rights Campaign. "Through her efforts and commitment to serving the
less fortunate in the community, many individuals and families received much
needed legal assistance last year," said Mr. Parver.
The awards are presented to the attorney(s) who exemplify a commitment to
professional excellence in delivery of pro bono legal services and community
service. In recognition of this service, the Firm makes a contribution in the
