Institute Offers Companies and Consumers Cyber Security Training Starting At
$99
SAN FRANCISCO, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA(R) CONFERENCE -- EDS
(NYSE: EDS) today announced its expanded Cyber Security Institute curriculum
by offering industry-leading security training courses from RSA Security.
The Institute, which EDS launched last week at COMDEX Chicago, is a
comprehensive computer security curriculum designed to arm IT professionals
and consumers with skills to battle hackers, security breaches and viruses.
EDS will employ RSA Security's content and expertise to develop three
additional web-based courses, marking the first time RSA Security's course
content has been made available through web delivery. Topics selected for
web-based courseware development include Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
Fundamentals, PKI Implementation Methodology and Wireless E-security. In
addition, EDS will provide access to 11 RSA Security instructor-led courses
from the Institute web site -- bringing the Cyber Security Institute's total
course offerings to 29.
"Security is a key enabler of the digital economy and there is a critical
need for trained information assurance professionals in the market today,"
said Shakil Kidwai, vice president of Global Information Assurance Services
for EDS, in a keynote speech to the RSA Conference. "To provide the most
comprehensive and accessible cyber security curriculum, we must develop our
own courses, but also join forces with industry leaders.
"Businesses and consumers will be able to combat cyber criminals with
increased effectiveness if more of our population is educated about cyber
security issues," Kidwai said. "Migrating training for the web that
previously was only available in a face-to-face format is what protecting our
homes and businesses is all about."
Market Trends Indicate a Critical Need for Cyber Security Training
A recent study by International Data Corp. (IDC) predicted the market for
information security training will double by 2004, growing from $419 million
to nearly $1 billion. At the same time, research shows security knowledge is
lacking. Fewer than one in 20 security professionals are able to apply
appropriate security measures, according to the May 2000 SANS Security
Newsletter. At the same time, a Computer Security Institute survey found that
64 percent of respondents had experienced financial losses because of security
breaches, including theft of proprietary information, denial-of-service
attacks and employee abuse of Internet privileges.
To address this issue, EDS is making critical information assurance
training available to the marketplace. These courses were previously
available only to EDS employees in order to strengthen employees' information
assurance skills and increase the company's ability to compete in the growing
Internet security market.
Now, companies and consumers can access the Institute's on-demand,
globally-available Web-based courseware, which is based on the DigitalThink e-
learning platform and offers an interactive, cost-effective method for
training in critical security topics such as secure system administration,
firewalls, network security, risk assessment, incident handling and response,
threats, vulnerabilities and countermeasures.
Consumers can use credit cards to register for Web-based courses, which
range in price from $99 to $450. An entry-level class, Security Fundamentals,
provides critical security information for all computer users. Another
course, Information Assurance Overview, is recommended for technical leaders,
network technicians and systems administrators.
"We believe that there is significant pent up demand in the marketplace
for security training," said Rick Welch, vice president of Professional
Services at RSA Security. "People know how important information assurance
has become with the new online economy and they want to learn more about it.
"The problem has been the delivery mechanism. Personal training is
expensive and difficult to schedule. Internet-based training is just the
opposite. It can reach almost everyone and each student can go at his or her
own pace. With the help of EDS' expertise in designing web-based courseware
and the DigitalThink platform, we will be able to disseminate our training
content much more effectively and quickly."
