LEXINGTON, MA USA
Will Also Implement New Rational XDE Professional: Java Platform Edition

    LEXINGTON, Mass., April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) today announced that Aetna (NYSE: AET) will
standardize on Rational Suite(R) Enterprise for all software development
projects across the Aetna Information Services (AIS) organization.
Implementing the Rational software development platform will increase the
speed and quality for AIS projects and enable Aetna to maintain leadership in
the rapidly changing healthcare industry through continued information
technology innovation.
AIS is the internal business support and service organization that
provides all information and technology needs to the enterprise. AIS manages
and maintains all the systems and infrastructure that supports Aetna's full
range of Health and Group Insurance products as well as connectivity to its
constituents.
    Aetna has implemented Rational(R) RequisitePro(R), Rational(R)
ClearQuest(R) and the Rational Unified Process(R). Rational's tools and the
Rational Unified Process will help improve Aetna's customer service by
enabling AIS to develop and support better automated service delivery systems.
The implementation of the Rational software development platform will also
help improve the speed and quality of development projects through consistent
application of customized process and best practices on all projects, enhanced
communication among team members and business managers, component-based
development, and improved requirements capture and management to maintain
schedules and keep software targeted to customers' needs.
"We chose Rational Suite Enterprise because it provides an integrated
software development tool set with a customizable process of software
development best practices," said Vince Murphy, director of application
architecture, Aetna. "Utilizing the Rational software development platform
across our organization will free our developers from unproductive activities
typically associated with software development, enabling them to deliver
better software faster. We've always been a leader in providing quality
services to customers, and this new development capability will enable us to
continue to enhance our customers' experience."
In addition to Aetna's use of Rational Suite Enterprise, the company has
also acquired more than 1,000 licenses for Rational(R) XDE(TM) Professional
v2002: Java Platform Edition, and is currently planning to deploy this new
tool in its development teams. Announced in February 2002, Rational XDE
Professional v2002: Java Platform Edition is integrated into IBM WebSphere
Studio Application Developer and the IBM Eclipse Java-based integrated
development environments (IDEs). Rational XDE Professional: Java Platform
Edition empowers Java developers to code and design directly in these leading
Java IDEs without switching between different, loosely-integrated tools.

"As the nation's leading health care organization, Aetna relies on
software to help provide the highest quality of service and support to
customers," said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of marketing, Rational
Software. "Rational's software development platform and the consistent
application of best practices across projects will help liberate the AIS
employees from the activities that can make software development seem chaotic,
and empower them to develop better quality software that meets customers'
needs."
