Ms. Hathcock, who joined Humana as senior vice president of human
resources in 1999, was chosen from among 100 nominees received from the
magazine's readership and from analysts, academicians and human resources
leaders. From this group the magazine selected 25 honorees "whose levels of
responsibility and achievements in their organizations and in the HR
discipline are indicative not only of their strategic, hard-driving and
imaginative abilities, but are also reflective of the ever-changing role of
women in business today," according to Anne Freedman, writing about the awards
in a recent HR Executive cover story.
"Bonnie developed and led a wide-ranging cultural transformation at Humana
that has empowered our associates and helped position us as the leading
consumer company in our industry," said Michael B. McCallister, president and
chief executive officer of Humana. "In addition, as the architect of our
groundbreaking MOCHA health benefit plans, she led what is fast becoming a
revolution in our industry - turning passive health care users into savvy,
value-conscious health care consumers who are enabled, through actionable
information, to choose and use their benefits with confidence. She is truly a
deserving award recipient and a valued member of our senior leadership team,
and I congratulate her on her achievement."
Ms. Freedman's article included a profile of Ms. Hathcock in which Ms.
Hathcock offered this advice to women seeking leadership roles in human
resources: "Stay out of the mire, the transactions. Hire talented, smart
people - many with no HR background for maximum thought leadership.
Concentrate on the truly high-impact initiatives that help you leave your mark
on the company."
Prior to joining Humana, Ms. Hathcock was vice president of human
resources for US Airways in Arlington, Virginia, and before that for Siemens-
Rolm in California's Silicon Valley. She also served in sales and marketing
roles at Xerox Corp.
Ms. Hathcock serves on the boards of Inroads for Greater
Cincinnati/Kentucky and the National Business Aviation Association. She is a
member of the HR Policy Association, the Human Resources Planning Society, and
the Society for Human Resources Management.
She holds a Master of Business Administration and in addition is a
graduate of the Executive Human Resources Program of the Stanford University
School of Business. Ms. Hathcock and her husband reside in Louisville,
Kentucky.
