OfficeMax Giving Away Free MaxBrite Recycled Paper on Earth Day, and Free
Reams of Recycled Paper to Shoppers Who Recycle Cell Phones and Used Toner
Cartridges
CLEVELAND, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- OfficeMax(R) wants to challenge your
thinking about recycled paper. In celebration of Earth Day, Thursday, April
22, 2004, OfficeMax will give away free sample packs of its MaxBrite(R)
Premium Recycled Copy Paper to the first 100 customers at each OfficeMax
location nationwide, while supplies last. The giveaway aims to show that
recycled paper is not only good for the environment, but is also of high
quality.
"In the early days, recycled papers just didn't measure up to non-recycled
papers. But all that has changed," said Gary Peterson, president of OfficeMax
retail operations. "New recycled-content papers such as MaxBrite mark an
evolution in the quality of environmentally preferable papers, with improved
brightness, runnability and reduced jamming in high-speed, high-volume copiers
and laser printers."
To further encourage shoppers to try recycled papers, OfficeMax will give
a free ream of recycled-content paper to customers who recycle their old cell
phones or used inkjet and toner cartridges. Shoppers can drop off cell phones
and cartridges at any OfficeMax store nationwide on Earth Day or any day year-
round to receive 500 sheets of recycled paper at no cost.
"As part of OfficeMax's commitment to environmental responsibility, we
encourage customers to give recycled paper a try with these free sample packs,
or by dropping off old cell phones and used inkjet and toner cartridges,"
added Peterson.
Shoppers also will see two new recycled-content office papers on OfficeMax
store shelves under the retailer's MaxBrite private label. OfficeMax has
introduced MaxBrite(R) 100 percent Recycled Multipurpose, the brightest 100
percent recycled-content office paper on the market - a 92 brightness, acid-
free, 20-pound weight paper. The MaxBrite line also contains eight new colored
multipurpose papers with 30 percent recycled content. The two new recycled-
content papers provide greater choices for shoppers who desire environmentally
preferable alternatives to traditional papers.

Five Tips for Wise Paper Use
Earth Day brings out the conservationist in many people, whether it's
carpooling or picking up litter. But there are additional things you can do to
help promote environmental conservation. OfficeMax(R), one of the nation's
leading office supply retailers, and Boise(SM) Paper Solutions, one of the
country's largest manufacturers of office papers, suggest the following tips
for environmentally wise paper use at work or in the home office:
1. Encourage e-communication. Send reports and memos via email, and fax
documents from your computer if possible. Change your screen settings
to make the fonts a comfortable size. Making documents easier to read
on-screen reduces the need to produce hard copies.
2. Procrastinate! Wait to print your documents until right before you need
them for a meeting or mailing. Review and proof on screen, saving paper
copies for the final version of the document.
3. Skip fax cover sheets. You save two sheets of paper each time you skip
the fax cover sheet and instead write your recipient's name directly on
the fax document. It's one less sheet you print and one less sheet for
your recipient.
4. Set your copier/printer on automatic duplex. We all know that copying
and printing on both sides of the paper helps reduce paper waste, but
few do it. Setting the copier/printer on automatic duplex will save
paper without causing an extra step in the copying process.
5. Re-use the blank side of unwanted documents. Rather than throwing away
unwanted papers, keep them in a stack by your desk and use for note
taking, or by the printer for printing draft reports.
