Volunteers Needed...Illinois UPS Employees Answer the Call

CHICAGO, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A year ago at the Presidents' Summit for
America's Future, the call went out across the country to increase the number
of volunteers and volunteer hours devoted to youth. A year later, many
companies, organizations and people have answered the call.
Two examples of outstanding volunteers in Illinois are Julius Polk and
Greg Boyda, UPS employees from the Chicago area.
-- Julius Polk helped to form the Woodlawn Development Associates
(WDA), an organization dedicated to reviving the neighborhood,
creating a more desirable place to live.
-- Polk, his wife and three daughters are active members of their Block
Club, assisting with neighborhood clean-ups and participating in
       meetings.
-- Polk sponsors and mentors 11 "little brothers" from Woodlawn.
Having grown up in a single-parent household and feeling the absence of
a father figure, he is committed to serving as a role
       model for community youth.
-- Polk has involved several of his UPS co-workers in WDA programs.
In addition, Polk worked with UPS to become a corporate sponsor of
       the organization's annual community festival.
-- Greg Boyda recruited 10 UPS co-workers to begin a summer reading
program for students at a South-Side Chicago school. The program
proved successful, and Boyda has continued his Saturday tutoring into
       the school year.
-- Boyda served as a member of the Chicago Literacy Council, through which
       he tutored adults.

Please call the listed contacts if you are interested in speaking with
Polk or Boyda or hearing about UPS' Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program, which
matches employees willing to volunteer with local agencies. Also available is
information on the results of a national survey on volunteerism sponsored by
The UPS Foundation.
