The Prudential Foundation Awards Grant of More Than $129,000 to Project HOPE

Funds to Help Support Tsunami Humanitarian Mission

MILLWOOD, Va., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Prudential Foundation has
awarded Project HOPE a grant of more than $129,000 for its tsunami relief and
recovery effort, the international nonprofit organization announced today.
The funds will support Project HOPE's ongoing efforts to provide
assistance -- including a humanitarian aid mission in south Asia, based aboard
the USNS Mercy -- to communities affected by the December tsunami. Under the
three-month Mercy mission, more than 200 physicians, nurses and other health
care providers recruited by Project HOPE have assisted U.S. Navy personnel in
providing care to more than 20,000 tsunami survivors. Project HOPE has also
delivered needed medicines and supplies to hospitals, clinics and emergency
centers in some of the most affected areas, and will be providing long-term
reconstruction assistance in both Indonesia and Thailand.
"The overwhelming generosity of Prudential and its employees demonstrates
their commitment to the global community," said John P. Howe III, M.D.,
President and CEO of Project HOPE. "Project HOPE has always shared these
values and is honored to use these funds in furthering that mission."
The Prudential Foundation matched employees' contributions of $64,917.94
to The Prudential Cares Disaster Relief Fund, for a total donation of
$129,837.65.
"Project HOPE has long been recognized as a leader in responding to some
of the world's most pressing health crises," said Gabriella Morris, president
of The Prudential Foundation and vice president, Community Resources. "The
Prudential Foundation is proud to assist their efforts."
Project HOPE's history of providing "Health Opportunities for People
Everywhere" began in 1958 with President Eisenhower's donation of the first
peacetime hospital ship, the SS HOPE. Its maiden voyage was to Indonesia.
Today, Project HOPE conducts land-based medical training and health education
programs in 34 countries across five continents. For more information about
