New Storage System Delivers Twice the Storage per Dollar Compared to Leading
Systems; Removable Hard Drives Enable Businesses to Increase Capacity
As Storage Requirements Grow
SAN DIEGO, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- Gateway, Inc.
(NYSE: GTW) today announced the Gateway(TM) GS 400 storage system, the first
in a series of Network Attached Storage products designed to give growing
businesses and institutions quick, reliable storage capacity that won't strain
their resources or budget.
The GS 400 is a storage appliance that delivers maximum value with high
storage capacities, flexibility and reliability features typically found in
more expensive, higher-end systems. With prices starting at less than
$12.00 per gigabyte, the GS 400 is a cost-effective way to instantly add
storage to any computer network. The GS 400 is available now in three models:
-- Model 140 with 40GB of storage, expandable to 160GB, is priced at $999.
-- Model 260 with 120GB of storage, expandable to 240GB, is priced at
$1,999.
-- Model 460 with 240GB of storage is priced at $2,799.
Unlike competitive offerings in this class, the three models of the GS 400
can be expanded with additional hard disk drives to increase capacity as
businesses' storage needs grow. Upgrading the products with additional
storage capacity is simplified through the system's easy-to-access
front-loading hard drive bays. This feature also provides an additional level
of security, as the drives can be removed and stored in a separate, protected
location.
"As the digital office becomes a reality, gigabytes of network-based files
replace file cabinets as the storage medium of this century," said Chris
Norman, director of server product marketing, Gateway. "The GS 400 is an
economical way for any growing organization to quickly and easily increase
storage capacity to handle their expanding computing needs."
Norman added, "The GS 400 offering extends the company's commitment to
provide our customers with value-based solutions that are easy-to-use and
maintain. Gateway's entry into this market space shows that the company is
dedicated to meeting our customers' real-world business needs."
According to Gartner Dataquest, a San Jose-based research firm, the market
for Network Attached Storage appliances is expected to grow from $1.4 billion
in 2000 to $7.4 billion in 2004, as demand for greater network storage
increases dramatically by a range of organizations.
The GS 400 storage system is ideal for small and medium businesses,
workgroups of large corporations, educational and government institutions and
small and medium Internet Service Providers and Application Service Providers.
"While organizations such as engineering firms, pre-press companies, and
design firms have high storage needs because of the graphic-intense nature of
their data, mainstream businesses also have a greater need for storage due to
email, increased use of graphics and data-intense files such as
presentations," concluded Norman.
The GS 400 storage system is based on a Network Attached Storage
architecture, which bypasses the host server and connects directly to the
network, eliminating the need to compete with the server for resources.
Through the GS 400 system, individual computer users have direct access to
data, allowing them to quickly access their important information.
Flexibility and ease-of-use make Gateway's GS 400 an ideal solution for
any business. A quick connection to the network cable followed by a simple
guided software installation has the storage system up and running in
10 minutes. Additionally, the GS 400 can be used to provide multi-platform
support, file server functionality or even as a back-up device for the
network's servers.
High-reliability features were designed throughout the system to ensure
businesses have a high performance product that requires very little on-going
maintenance. System management and monitoring are browser-based, for
anytime/anywhere system checking. Support for RAID levels 0, 1 and 5 are
built into the GS 400 storage system for enhanced reliability.
The new GS 400 storage system can be stored and accessed conveniently; the
slim 1U form-factor appliance can be stacked on a desktop or placed in an
industry-standard 19-inch server rack. Gateway supports its business,
government and education customers with a host of services. Free on-site
consultation helps customers get the solutions that are right for their needs.
An optional four-hour on-site response service program ensures maximum up time
for critical business applications, while installation and integration
services assist companies who have limited IT resources.
