Xilinx Unveils New Technology at ESC
At the Embedded Systems Conference this week, Xilinx (Nasdaq: XLNX)
announced the release of new advanced features for its industry-leading
MicroBlaze(TM) 32-bit soft processor core including Hardware Divide,
LocalLink, Instruction and Data caches, and a Barrel Shifter. Delivering 68
Dhrystone-MIPS at 85 MHz in the new Spartan-3(TM) FPGA, MicroBlaze provides
customers with a high-performance, low-cost processor solution with the
effective price of $1.40.
In related news, Xilinx also announced its Embedded Development Kit (EDK)
version 3.2 for designing SoC using Xilinx FPGAs. EDK(TM) version 3.2
innovates the programmable system domain by integrating embedded hard and
soft-core processors, customizable IP, and FPGA logic into a single
programmable platform. With the new version, designers can now efficiently
implement embedded systems using Xilinx Virtex-II Pro(TM) FPGAs featuring hard
embedded IBM PowerPC(TM) cores and Multi-Gigabit Transceivers and/or a soft
processor system using MicroBlaze in Spartan-3 FPGAs.
Xilinx Named Best of Show Award Finalist
Selected from 30 entries, Xilinx has been named a Best of Show Award
finalist for embedded technology in an end-user application. Xilinx was
selected as a finalist for its low cost programmable Spartan Series chips
embedded in the groundbreaking Gibson MaGIC(TM) Digital Guitar -- the
industry's first electric guitar to deliver true digital sound. The Xilinx
enabled guitar will be on display in Xilinx booth #1813 April 23 - 26, 2003.
The Best of Show winner will be announced at booth #238 at 6:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, April 23.
Xilinx Workshop
In this one and a half hour workshop, attendees will implement a SoC
targeting Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGAs featuring an embedded IBM PowerPC(TM)
core and Multi-Gigabit Transceivers using the Xilinx ISE(TM) Platform Studio
design environment.

and Spartan Series programmable system solutions. Examples of both hard
PowerPC and soft MicroBlaze processor applications will be
demonstrated.
-- System Development Tools
A wide variety of development technologies will be on display including
support for embedded software tools, Integrated Development Environment
(IDE) support, IP creation and more.
-- Reference Boards, Evaluation Platforms and Embedded OS Support Examples
A wide sampling of hardware platforms, reference boards and evaluation
systems will be on display to demonstrate device support, system
integration, and embedded OS validation.
-- Connectivity
Facilitating a PCI Express(TM) core, a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro
connectivity example will demonstrate a real time streaming video
application.
-- System Tools for DSP
A demonstration of System Generator for DSP(TM) tool will provide a new
platform for high-performance DSP design. It will include HDL
simulation and control plane integration.
