Oki Semiconductor Pairs with Innovada to Unveil Low-Cost, V.22bis Embedded Modem Solution for Oki's ARM-Powered, 32-Bit MCU Products

Software Modem Solution Aimed at Industrial Applications Replaces
                        Expensive Hardware Components

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, SAN FRANCISCO, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Oki
Semiconductor, a leading technology partner for the new era of digital
communications and convergence, together with Innovada, a leader in device to
device communications, today announced a V.22bis embedded modem solution for
Oki's advantage microcontroller(TM) family of general purpose MCU products.
The software modem solution, in combination with Oki's ARM7(TM) core family-
based ML674K and ML675K series of microcontrollers, is a turn-key, inexpensive
alternative to hardware modem chipsets, and is aimed at industrial, point-of-
sale, remote access and other data applications.
The Oki-Innovada solution consists of two parts: Innovada's soft modem
designed to run on Oki's advantage microcontroller families, and a single DAA
chip, a fully integrated line-interface component. All of the analog
circuitry is included in one component, resulting in reduced design-in and
manufacturing costs, a low unit price, and higher reliability for users. A
smaller package footprint saves board space and enables the Oki-Innovada soft
modem solution to be implemented in a greater selection of products.
"Today's announcement is another step in our commitment to expand the
solutions and functionality available for Oki's ARM7 families of advantage
microcontrollers products," said Mitchell Le, senior product marketing manager
for MCU products, Oki Semiconductor. "The availability of the Oki-Innovada
V.22bis embedded solution will provide designers with a flexible modem
communication option that is cost effective and carries low design risk.
System designers can now include seamless Internet connectivity at very little
additional cost."

Key features of the Oki-Innovada soft modem solution include:
-- A novel isolation technique to pass AC signals through a 5000 V
       isolation barrier
-- A single DAA in a 14-pin SIL package, which minimizes board space and
       component count
-- A complete modem function which eliminates the need for a modem
controller, data pump, codec, 2-to-4 wire converter, isolation
transformer, hook switch, ringing detector, gyrator, polarity guard and
       over voltage protection

"By providing all of the line interface hardware as a single highly
integrated component, and combining it with optimized modem software, the risk
and development delays associated with adding modem connectivity to products
is removed," said Brendan Murphy, CTO of Innovada. "Replacing modem ICs with
a software modem running on the embedded system's controller, reduces costs
and improves reliability by reducing the overall chip count, realizing the
goal of single-chip solutions for a broad range of markets."

    Oki's advantage microcontrollers ML674K and ML675K Series
Oki's ML674K series of MCU products announced earlier this year are aimed
at designers seeking 32-bit CPU performance at a price that is highly
competitive with 8-bit and 16-bit products. Based on the ARM7TDMI(R) core,
the Oki ML674K and ML675K product families are general-purpose
microcontrollers ideally suited for a range of applications including
industrial, consumer electronics, biomedical and medical instrumentation, PC
peripherals and security appliance systems.
The ML674K series of MCU solutions, and Oki's newly introduced ML675K
series with even higher performance, provide better alternatives to
proprietary architecture in great part because of the higher performance,
wider industry support, more ready-to-use software applications and a range of
tools from third-party vendors.

    Price and Availability
The Innovada IN30144 single package DAA is presently sampling. Production
prices are less than $3 in quantities of 100,000 units. The Innovada soft
modem is available under a royalty-free license.
