LOS ANGELES, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Streaming Media West -- Surgient
Networks, the industry's first "real-world" open platform for rich media and
other I/O-intensive applications, today announced a new tiered pricing model
for the streaming market that for the first-time will allow streaming content
providers to purchase a set amount of streaming capacity from Surgient's
eQ2500(TM) platform and to increase that amount as their streaming needs
evolve.
Surgient's new model will provide a variable price for streamed content
delivery that will remove a significant cost barrier into the streaming market
that many smaller and occasional providers of streaming have had to face.
Surgient's plan will offer current and potential content providers of rich
media all of the standard features of its eQ2500 platform while only charging
for that subscribed portion of the box that is actually used to stream their
content.
Under this new-tiered pricing model, providers may purchase between
220 Mbps and 1.2 Gbps of aggregate streaming throughput for prices beginning
at $29,900. For example, a customer broadcasting audio content could purchase
a minimum of 6,500 28 Kbps stream capacity and increase its use to more than
16,000 28 Kbps streams without purchasing additional equipment. Video
streamers could purchase a minimum of 364 1 Megabit streams and increase to
more than 1,000 1 Megabit streams also without purchasing additional
equipment.
In addition, provider will enjoy the complete suite of Surgient's patented
deterministic features that includes the ability to meter and monitor all
streams for e-Utility revenue opportunities, overload protection and a
guaranteed level of quality for the entire streaming experience, and a set-up
latency of less than six seconds with no packet loss at any load level.
"Surgient's variable pricing model will for the first-time allow providers
of all sizes to set realistic budget forecasts for streaming based on actual
estimated usage," said Nagi Rao, President and CEO of Surgient Networks.
"This new -- capacity on demand -- model will encourage more providers to
enter the rich media marketplace and should help to drive the cost of
streaming to more competitive cost levels."
Surgient now hosts the most powerful streaming platform on the market
today with the ability to serve some 16,000 on-demand streams and some
14,000 live streams from a single, 3.5" hardware platform. Surgient will
demonstrate its Microsoft Windows Media and RealNetworks(R) capabilities at
Streaming Media West, April 24 to 26, 2002 at the Los Angeles Convention
Center in Los Angeles, Ca., in booth #332.
"Streaming media is increasingly being deployed on web sites for a number
of purposes, including marketing and communications, brand building and to
provide all types of information. By year-end 2003, we expect that 50% of
e-commerce sites will use streaming media in an effort to increase online
sales," said Lawrence Orans, Sr. Analyst at Gartner, Inc.
