SAN FRANCISCO, April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The MC33982
Self-Protected Silicon Switch from Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor
Products Sector was awarded Innovation of the Year by EDN magazine at a
ceremony in San Francisco at Embedded Systems Conference.
The annual award recognizes engineering excellence among unique,
state-of-the art electronics products in 17 major product categories.
Electronics industry professionals nominate innovative products and
individuals and EDN's editors choose the finalists. Votes cast by EDN readers
via online ballot determined the winners.
"It is with great pride that we accept this honor recognizing our
innovation in mixed-signal IC technology," said Scott Anderson, senior vice
president and general manager for Motorola's Transportation & Standard
Products Group. "We're focused on providing products and technologies that
help embedded systems designers reduce development time, costs and complexity,
while increasing system functionality and reliability."
The MC33982
Motorola's MC33982 Self-Protected Silicon Switch won the Innovation of the
Year award in the Power integrated circuits (ICs) category. This 2 milliohm
high-side power switch is a mixed-signal, multi-chip IC designed to replace
electromechanical relays, fuses and discrete devices in a variety of embedded
systems. It helps designers of power electronics systems to better manage
power distribution, reduce board space and increase system reliability.
The MC33982 is ideal for systems that require up to two kilowatts of power
control such as electrical actuators in appliances, power hand tools, dish
positioning systems, and marine and automotive electronic systems. Unlike
mechanical relays, the power IC is not as susceptible to wear, contact
malfunctions or corrosion over time. With the lowest ON resistance of any
automotive-grade solid-state switch commercially available today, the MC33982
enables significant power savings and less heat generation in a number of
applications. The MC33982 device and family of derivatives address a
potential $2.5 billion automotive total available market (TAM) with even
greater non-automotive opportunity.
