TIAA-CREF Employees, Company Executives and Area Leaders Honor Former Chairman
CHARLOTTE N.C., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- TIAA-CREF (Teachers Insurance and
Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Fund) today recognized its
former chairman, John H. Biggs, by naming the company's first Charlotte
building in his honor.
The dedication of "The John H. Biggs Building" marked the official opening
of the company's 6-story, glass domed structure in the University Research
Park area and included remarks by Biggs and by TIAA-CREF Chairman Herbert
Allison.
"There is no more appropriate facility within this company than the
Southern Service Center to hold this record of accomplishment that illustrates
the overall vision and dedication John Biggs brought to TIAA-CREF," Allison
said. "The foundation for the future of TIAA-CREF will be set in the Southern
Service Center and The John H. Biggs Building will be the center of that
growth."
Biggs served as chairman and chief executive officer of TIAA-CREF from
1993 until 2002. He also served as the company's president and chief operating
officer from 1989 until 1993.
Under Biggs' leadership, TIAA launched its Teachers Personal Annuity, an
after tax variable annuity that can be used as a savings product to help
people employed at not-for-profit education and research institutions
potentially increase their retirement savings. Then, in 1999, TIAA-CREF Life
Insurance Company introduced Personal Annuity Select, an after tax variable
annuity that was made available to the general public.
Biggs also lead TIAA-CREF when it opened the TIAA-CREF Western Counseling
and Telephone Services Center in Denver, which allowed the company to expand
its service hours and better assist national customers.
Also during Biggs' tenure, TIAA-CREF surpassed $200 billion in assets
under management, and introduced TIAA-CREF mutual funds to the general public.
In 1999, Biggs was instrumental in choosing Charlotte as the home of
TIAA-CREF's Southern Service Center and the site of the company's future
growth.
"It is an honor to have this building named for me," Biggs said. "I
certainly recognize that during my tenure with TIAA-CREF it was the associates
that helped build this company into what it is today, so much of this honor
rests with them."
