Connell Bill Outlaws Selling Military Medals in State's Unclaimed Property
SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- A bill of special interest to
California veterans and their families passed the state assembly today
70 to 0 and is on its way to the Governor's desk awaiting his signature.
AB 938 sponsored by State Controller Kathleen Connell and carried by
Assemblyman John Dutra (D, Fremont), would prevent the state from selling
Purple Hearts and other military medals found among unclaimed property turned
over to the state.
Under current law, the controller, as custodian of all unclaimed property
such as inactive bank safety deposit boxes, must sell all items at auction.
"Those medals should only belong to the brave men and women who earned them in
the service of their country and this state," says Connell. "It is improper
for the state to sell off these symbols of honor and duty as though they were
mere trinkets in a garage sale," says Connell.
AB 938 passed through both houses of the legislature overwhelmingly. If
signed by the Governor, it becomes law immediately.
