DETROIT, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of minority professionals
who work in the energy industry are gathering in Detroit this week for the
29th annual conference of the American Association of Blacks in Energy.
"Understanding Barriers to Affordable Energy" is the theme of the
conference being held at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center through
Friday.
Conference speakers and panel members include: Daniel F. Packer,
president of Entergy New Orleans; Michael G. Morris, chairman, president
and chief executive officer of American Electric Power; Frank M. Clark,
chairman and chief executive officer of Commonwealth Edison; Desiree
Rogers, president of Peoples Energy and North Shore Gas; John Krenicki Jr.,
president and chief executive officer of GE Energy; Wendell Holland,
chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission; Kraig Naasz,
president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association;
and Mary Coleman, a Mississippi state representative and president of the
National Black Caucus of State Legislators.
The conference chairman, Calvin H. Talley, said the conference
organizing team wanted to provide a comprehensive overview of the broad
variety of issues facing leaders in the energy industry.
"This is a pivotal time for the energy industry and we met our goal of
assembling 'the best of the best' group of speakers and panelists to
discuss issues ranging from the potential renaissance of nuclear plant
development to new energy technologies to the impact that high energy
prices are having on minority customers," said Talley, a gas field manager
for Consumers Energy.
"This conference is aimed at helping the American Association of Blacks
in Energy fulfill its mission to ensure the input of African-Americans and
other minorities into the discussion and development of energy policies,
regulations, research and development, and environmental concerns."
Tonight's chairman's reception -- hosted by Paul Preketes, senior vice
president of gas operations for the Jackson, Mich.-based Consumers Energy
-- will take place at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American
History
AABE is a non-profit organization with more than 1,200 energy
professional members across the United States
