Headend Equipment Based on Broadcom's QAMLink DOCSIS 2.0-Based CMTS Chipset
Offers Improved Performance and Significant Cost Savings to Cable Operators
IRVINE, Calif., April 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation,
(Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor
solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that the ARRIS
Cadant(R) C3(TM) cable modem termination system (CMTS) using Broadcom's CMTS
chipset achieved DOCSIS(R) 2.0 qualification in the most recent wave of
certification testing conducted by CableLabs(R).
The Broadcom(R) DOCSIS 2.0-based CMTS chipset enables cable operators to
deliver new interactive cable services to more subscribers at a lower capital
equipment cost. These new services include secure virtual private networks
(VPNs) for telecommuters, full-featured IP telephony, videoconferencing, local
web hosting, and peer-to-peer networking applications, such as those provided
by Windows XP(R) instant messaging features, music downloads and file sharing.
"We are very pleased that the Cadant C3 received CableLabs' DOCSIS 2.0
qualification," said Daniel A. Marotta, Group Vice President of Broadcom's
Broadband Communications Group. "This achievement will provide significant
performance and value to cable operators and their subscribers."
The Cadant C3 DOCSIS 2.0-qualified CMTS uses Broadcom's BCM3140 QAMLink
dual universal A-TDMA/S-CDMA burst receiver, BCM3040 DOCSIS 2.0-based QAMLink
modulator and BCM3214 DOCSIS 2.0-based QAMLink media access controller (MAC).
"Receiving DOCSIS 2.0 qualification for the Cadant C3 CMTS continues our
leadership position in providing cable operators with the most advanced CMTS
solutions," said ARRIS Broadband President Jim Lakin. "These carrier-grade
products, based on Broadcom's DOCSIS 2.0 silicon technology, will further
increase our customers' return on investment for the deployment of advanced
services, by enabling them to capture more frequency bandwidth in their cable
plant, and thus, service more customers over a fixed cost."
The CableLabs Certified(R) or CableLabs Qualified designation means that
the device has passed a series of tests for compliance with the indicated
version of the Specification and has thus demonstrated interoperable
functionality with any other CableLabs Certified or CableLabs Qualified
device.

conditions in the markets we address, including the continuing significant
economic slowdown and volatility in the technology sector and semiconductor
industry, trends in the broadband communications markets in various geographic
regions, and possible disruption in commercial activities related to terrorist
activity or armed conflict in the United States and other locations; the rate
at which our present and future customers and end-users adopt Broadcom's
technologies and products in the markets for cable applications; delays in the
adoption and acceptance of industry standards in those markets; competitive
pressures and other factors such as the qualification, availability and
pricing of competing products and technologies and the resulting effects on
sales and pricing of our products; our ability to retain and hire key
executives, technical personnel and other employees in the numbers, with the
capabilities, and at the compensation levels needed to implement our business
and product plans; the availability and pricing of third party semiconductor
foundry and assembly capacity and raw materials; fluctuations in the
manufacturing yields of our third party semiconductor foundries and other
problems or delays in the fabrication, assembly, testing or delivery of our

risk; problems or delays that we may face in shifting our products to smaller
geometry process technologies and in achieving higher levels of design
integration; the quality of our products and any remediation costs; the
effectiveness of our expense and product cost control and reduction efforts;
the risks and uncertainties associated with our international operations,
particularly in light of recent events; the effects of natural disasters,
