36 Robots to 'Compete' at Houston Astro Arena Tournament; Houston's Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professions Team Will Introduce Innovative Robot at Regional Competition

    HOUSTON, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Thirty-six high school engineering teams
from 10 states will compete in the 2000 FIRST Robotics Competition on Friday,
March 17 and Saturday, March 18 at the Houston Astro Arena.  Houston's Booker
T. Washington High School for Engineering Professions team, sponsored in part
by ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM), will compete in the Lone Star Regional Competition,
a challenging tournament complete with referees, cheerleaders and time clocks.
    "This competition offers students an exciting opportunity to test their
science and math skills which are essential educational disciplines," said Ken
Cohen, vice president for public affairs, Exxon Mobil Corporation.  "Our
employee mentors provide additional expertise and resources to assist these
talented students in developing an innovative robot ready for intense
competition.  We are very pleased to be a school partner and sponsor of the
Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professions team."
    ExxonMobil has contributed more than $90,000 over three years as the lead
sponsor of the Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professions
team.  This support is part of ExxonMobil's extensive community contributions
and outreach program.  Kellogg Brown & Root, Powell Industries Inc. and Boeing
also donated funds, equipment and volunteers to the 2000 team.
    Founded in 1989, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and
Technology) is a non-profit organization that brings together an alliance of
business, education and government organizations through innovative programs
in science, engineering and technology designed to teach young people that
science is exciting and rewarding.  In the FIRST Robotics Competition, teams
compete in qualifying and elimination matches.  Regional teams will compete in
the FIRST National Championship in Orlando, Florida in April 2000.
