Fort James Corporation Announces Executive Changes; Company Creates E-Commerce Business Unit

CHICAGO, IL USA
    DEERFIELD, Ill., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The opportunity to more fully link
and coordinate shared resources for a unified North American Tissue Business,
along with the desire to create an entity focused solely on electronic
commerce, has led Fort James Corporation (NYSE: FJ) to announce a series of
changes within the company that accomplish both objectives.

    Daniel J. McCarty has been named President of Fort James' North American
Tissue Business, reporting to Miles Marsh.  In his new position, McCarty will
lead the company's Retail and Commercial Tissue businesses in North America.
Prior to this position, McCarty had been President of Fort James' Commercial
Business.  He joined Fort James in 1998 as President of the company's Dixie
Business.  Before coming to Fort James, McCarty was President and Chief
Executive Officer of American Crystal Sugar.  He previously held various
management positions at Pet, Inc. and Del Monte Foods.
    George F. Hartmann, Jr., formerly Senior Vice President of Fort James'
North American Commercial Sales, has been named President, North American
Commercial Business, reporting to Dan McCarty.  Prior to the creation of Fort
James through the merger of James River and Fort Howard corporations, Hartmann
had served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Fort Howard.
    William Schultz, formerly Executive Vice President of Fort James' Dixie
business, has been named President of Dixie, reporting to Miles Marsh.  Dixie
is the leading brand of disposable plates, cups and cutlery in North America.
Schultz joined James River in 1997 as Vice President, Retail Tabletop
Category.  He had previously held various managerial positions with Mars Inc.
and Procter & Gamble.
    Francis J. Florido has been named Senior Vice President, Corporate
Marketing, responsible for corporate marketing initiatives in both North
America and Europe.  He will report to Miles Marsh.  Florido was formerly
President of Fort James' North American Consumer Tissue Business.  He joined
James River in 1996 as Category Vice President, Tissue/Towel, and was later
named Vice President and General Manager, Retail Tissue, for Fort James.
Prior to joining James River, Florido held a number of management, strategic
planning and marketing positions at Kellogg Company, H.J. Heinz Company and
Pet, Inc.
    Finally, Gary Kurlancheek has been named president of Fort James.eB, a new
business unit designed to accelerate the development and deployment of
e-business initiatives across the company, and to grow business and gain
operating efficiencies through the use of Internet-based technologies.
Kurlancheek, formerly Vice President, Corporate Marketing for Fort James, will
report to Miles Marsh.  Kurlancheek joined James River Corporation in 1996 as
Vice President of Market Research.  Prior to joining James River, Kurlancheek
held various marketing and marketing research positions with Pillsbury and
General Mills.
