RICHMOND, Va., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Governor's School for Government
and International Studies, Richmond, Va., finished in the final four in the
Fed Challenge 2000 National Championship, held May 1 at the Federal Reserve
Board of Governors in Washington, D.C. A regional school for gifted and
talented students, the Governor's School draws from 13 school districts in the
central Virginia area.
The school's Fed Challenge team members include Ricky Carew, Daniel Hicks,
Roger Kuo, Alex Rothenberg and Kinjal Sheth. Elizabeth Biney-Amissah is team
alternate, and economics teacher Les Schreiber serves as faculty advisor. The
team members are all seniors.
Fed Challenge ignited the students' interest in monetary policy. According
to Alex Rothenberg, the best thing about the competition was getting to meet
and talk with the economists. "When I become Chairman of the Federal Reserve,"
said Roger Kuo, "I will be sure to judge the Fed Challenge." Elizabeth Biney-
Amissah plans to become "the first woman" Chairperson and appoint her team
members Vice Chairmen.
The Federal Reserve created Fed Challenge, a national academic
competition, to encourage better understanding of the nation's central bank,
the forces influencing economic conditions in the U.S. and abroad, and the
ways the economy affects everyone. The national competition was held in the
same room where the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Federal
Reserve's monetary policy arm, meets. Chairman Alan Greenspan opened the final
round.
More than 300 high school teams across the country participated in the Fed
Challenge competition. Seven teams advanced through competitions in their
respective Federal Reserve Districts to compete in the semifinal round in
Washington, D.C. Following that April 30 competition, the Governor's School
team and teams representing the Dallas, New York, and St. Louis Feds were
named the national finalists.
Each of the four teams delivered a 15-minute presentation on monetary
policy to a panel of Federal Reserve judges. A question-and-answer session
followed each presentation. The teams were scored on presentation, style,
content, teamwork, and responses to questions.
Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President J. Alfred Broaddus, Jr.,
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Robert D. McTeer, Jr., and Federal
Reserve Governor Edward M. Gramlich judged the final competition. The Dallas
team won the championship.
Citibank, which plays no role in administering the Fed Challenge, will
provide awards and scholarships for the national finalists and semifinalists.
The Governor's School will receive $11,000; the faculty advisor and each team
member, $4,000.
