National Foundation for Cancer Research Selects LabBook's Informatic Solution for Genomic Research

MCLEAN. Va., COLUMBUS, Ohio and BETHESDA, Md., May 3 /PRNewswire/ --
LabBook, Inc. an XML-based life science informatics and information-service
provider for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and academic researchers, has
partnered with the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR). The
agreement with LabBook will enable NFCR Centers around the world to further
the goal of active collaboration and the sharing of ideas among scientists by
providing LabBook informatic-enabling tools that will enhance the drug
discovery process.
The interactive nature of the LabBook technology will eventually allow for
linkage via Internet of NFCR Centers and other laboratories, with the intent
of uniquely connecting a stellar set of scientists in complementary
disciplines to synergistically amass research results to make inroads into the
problems of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. "The ability for
scientists around the globe to interface and share ideas and research in an
interactive manner opens a whole new facet to scientific research, expanding
the domain of discovery exponentially," stated Lorie Karnath, director
scientific advisory board, LabBook. "It is the NFCR's goal to foster
scientific collaboration and to create a global laboratory without walls. The
partnership with LabBook provides the tools to our researcher so that they can
pursue their research more efficiently," said Franklin Salisbury Jr.,
president of the NFCR.
LabBook's Informatic Solution allows NFCR users direct access to The Ohio
State University (OSU) Human Genome Database using LabBook's proprietary
Genome Query Engine and Genomic XML Browser (TM). The OSU Human Genome
Database is a fully integrated and annotated resource offered exclusively by
LabBook. The OSU Human Genome Database is based on the compilation and
integration of multiple independent maps including UniGene, dbEST, and the
draft human genome sequence, and the gene index is based on assembled and
mapped transcripts rather than gene prediction. This map is coupled with
LabBook's Query Engine, an hypothesis-driven interface that allows users to
query the richly annotated database in a meaningful fashion and deliver
results in an interactive visual environment.
The informatic solution provided by LabBook allows access to the Genomic
XML Browser(TM): a powerful graphic interface for visualizing and accessing
genomic information in meaningful and interactive ways, built around the
industry standard XML data format (BSML) developed by LabBook. Combining BSML
with an interactive, easy-to-use Browser creates the ideal "front end" for
bioinformatics. This solution enables dynamic integration and annotation of
diverse data. The Genomic XML Browser(TM) is part of LabBook's information
layer for discovery that includes XML-aware tools for management, analysis,
and communication of research data in the life sciences.
