Pennsylvania State University's Dr. Mary Jane Irwin Honored With Marie R. Pistilli Women in EDA Achievement Award

Recognized for Her Outstanding Teaching Accomplishments,
                      Technical Strength and Leadership

BOULDER, Colo., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Mary Jane Irwin, holder of the
A. Robert Noll Chair in Engineering in the Department of Computer Science and
Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, will be honored as this year's
winner of the Marie R. Pistilli Women in EDA Achievement Award. The award,
named for the Design Automation Conference's former organizer Marie Pistilli,
is presented annually to an individual who has notably helped advance women in
the electronic design automation (EDA) industry.
In naming Dr. Irwin, the award committee noted her notable technology
contribution as a Fellow of both IEEE and ACM, member of the National Academy
of Engineering, member of the Technical Advisory Board of the Army Research
Lab, a past Chair of DAC, as well as her inspirational and creating teaching
style to numerous women entering the field of electronics. She will receive
the award during the Workshop for Women in Design Automation (WWINDA) at the
41st DAC Monday, June 7th.

    About Dr. Mary Jane Irwin
Ellen Yoffa, Director of Emerging System Technologies at IBM Research
said, "I'm delighted that Mary Jane is being honored with this award. Not
only does she serve as a marvelous role model for technical women in design
automation, but she has worked tirelessly for many years to improve the
opportunities for other women in the field."
Irwin has been active in the EDA and electronics industries for 27 years
and has been a member of the Penn State University faculty since 1977. Her
research and teaching interests include computer architecture, embedded and
mobile computing systems design, low-power design and electronic design
automation. In the Penn State community, Irwin serves on the Commission for
Women, the Women in Engineering Program Advisory Board, and the Information
Sciences and Technology School Implementation Committee. She was head of the
Department of Computer Science from 1991 to 1993. She holds a doctoral degree
in computer science from the University of Illinois.
In September of 2003, Irwin was awarded an endowed chair -- the A. Robert
Noll Chair in Engineering. The A. Robert Noll Chair in Engineering provides
support for a distinguished faculty member in the College of Engineering to
continue and further scholarly excellence through contributions to
instruction, research, and public service.
"Receiving the 2004 Marie R. Pistilli Women in EDA Achievement Award is a
great honor -- made even more so by the fact that Marie and I have had the
opportunity to work together during my years on the DAC Executive Committee.
During that time, I was fortunate to see Marie 'in action' especially in her
efforts to do what she could to advance women in our field and to make sure
that women were recognized for their many contributions," said Dr. Mary Jane
Irwin.

Workshop for Women in Design Automation
WWINDA will present a program this year on how prominent professionals in
the industry have made career choices to achieve rewarding personal and
professional experiences. The keynote speaker, Duy-Loan Le, Senior Fellow,
Texas Instruments, will discuss her views her speech titled, "Keeping the
Passion Alive."
DAC will be held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif.,
from June 7 through June 11. For information regarding DAC registration or
the conference technical program, visit the DAC Web site at http://www.dac.com.
Conference discount registration deadline is May 10, 2004.
