ST. LOUIS, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The new CloudNine(TM) auto-CPAP system
from Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) is another of the company's growing line of
products designed to treat sleep apnea. The CloudNine's continuous positive
airway pressure system automatically adjusts the pressure level to assure that
pressure will be lower when less pressure is required and higher as the airway
becomes obstructed.
"Obstructive sleep apnea affects 12 million Americans between the ages of
30 and 60," said John Hesemann, president of Mallinckrodt's Respiratory Group.
"If left untreated, the problem can eventually lead to high blood pressure,
irregular heart beat or even heart failure. It also causes daytime
drowsiness, which leads to a loss of productivity and accidents in the
workplace. The CloudNine home care system is designed and approved to help
control sleep disorders caused by obstructive sleep apnea. The auto-CPAP
system makes it more comfortable for patients to spend time on the treatment
device at night, which leads to more effective therapy. The addition of the
CloudNine auto-CPAP gives us the full range of CPAP products."
CloudNine is Mallinckrodt's first auto-CPAP available on the U.S. market,
and is based on five years experience with its Morphee Plus product in Europe.
CloudNine will be sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Following referral by
a physician, it will be used primarily in the home, but it will also be used
in hospital sleep labs.
A unique feature of the CloudNine auto-CPAP system is its specially
designed SilverLining(TM) software. This user-friendly Windows-based software
program provides both summary statistics and analysis results that can be
printed on all Windows-supported printers. The settings can be changed in the
CloudNine through the SilverLining software via a local computer. In
addition, data can be downloaded either directly or from remote locations by
using a modem.
The CloudNine enhances patient treatment with two important features.
First, the easy-to-use patient-selectable ramp provides control over the
initial part of the therapy session. Second, the system's ultra quiet
operation helps insure uninterrupted sleep for the patient and the bed
partner.
Based in St. Louis, Mo., Mallinckrodt Inc. has three healthcare product
