The Diamond Award honors an individual or organization that has improved
the conditions for women in the workplace. Since 1977, the Women's Survival
Center (WSC) has provided invaluable services to Oakland County women and
families in need. The private nonprofit agency empowers women to attain
self-worth, self-advocacy and economic autonomy. At WSC, clients find legal
assistance, licensed counseling, employment information, computer training, a
resource center with a well-established referral network and scholarship
grants to complete their education. They may also benefit from subsidized
childcare. Since joining the staff of WSC in November 2001, McCarter
played an instrumental role in increasing the agency's resources, doubling
client services and facilitating a move to a larger facility. Under her
innovative leadership, Maggie's Rising Stars Child Center has been completely
renovated by volunteers to the tune of $400,000, in cash and in-kind
contributions. Beverly, a former client currently working for the survival
center, says the new site was needed to reach out to more people like herself.
Previously homeless and broke, Beverly now has two associate's degrees
and is in full control of her life after being in abusive relationships for
years. "I will finally have a job, my own insurance and money," she
acknowledged. "I was so beaten down but they gave me permission, in a way, to
take charge of my own life." WIC of Detroit salutes WSC for enabling
women to fulfill their human potential. WSC improves the conditions for women
in the workplace by allowing women to improve themselves. These women in turn
will pass along positive values to others, including their children.
The Vanguard Award recognizes an individual or organization that has
enriched the general quality of life through a communication medium.
Established in 1974, the AAA 1 - B serves more than 420,000 older adults in
its region including Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and
Washtenaw counties. As its first executive director, Reminga will celebrate
30 years along with AAA 1 - B this year. Through her leadership, the
nonprofit has grown to the largest of its kind in the nation. Reminga is
a passionate proponent of service for older adults and is being recognized by
WIC of Detroit for her effective use of communications in making sure that
area residents know about programs designed to help them.
The Headliner Award, applauding both professional achievements and
community service, is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a WIC
member. In her 25 years of marketing communications experience, Brennan has
excelled in her profession including successfully running her own graphic
design studio before joining P.S. Abrams as president. She recently launched
The Brennan Group, an independent marketing communications firm. Brennan
earned numerous awards for communications excellence from the International
Association of Business Communicators, an Emmy and a Clarion Award. She has
also been applauded for generously sharing her talents as a vocalist and
cabaret singer to create distinctive charity fundraisers. Brennan has served
on boards and assumed leadership roles for the International Institute, Life
Directions, Marketing and Sales Executives of Detroit, WIC of Detroit and
Women's Economic Club of Detroit. "We owe it to ourselves and the community
to help others grow and it makes the world a better place," said Brennan. Her
colleagues say, "She gives back to the community that would not be the same
without her."
