Past, Present & Future of Digital Medical Imaging on Display at SCAR 2005 in Orlando, FL

GREAT FALLS, Va., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Society for Computer
Applications in Radiology (SCAR) convenes its annual meeting in Orlando, FL,
June 2-5 with more than 130 exhibiting companies and 2500 attendees expected.
SCAR is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the meeting, with events and
displays that will chronicle the evolution of the Society and of corresponding
digital medical imaging technology from 1980 to the present. A 20' x 8' mural
outlining the history of SCAR will be on display.
SCAR Chair J. Anthony Seibert, PhD, will trace the parallel development in
his welcome remarks during the Opening General Session. Today, he says, the
imaging field is challenged by image overload, large datasets and new
modalities. Security and patient confidentiality are important aspects of day-
to-day operation. And image quality and quality control at all levels of
imaging informatics are critical for optimal patient care.
The meeting will highlight past, present and future. Accenting the
industry's past, several historical displays will be featured in the exhibit
hall at this year's meeting. These displays, from SCAR's early corporate
members, are educational exhibits with primary emphasis on the history of the
technology and the corporation's involvement with SCAR over the past 25 years.
The focus on the present is highlighted in SCAR's ongoing research and
education endeavors. SCAR continues its tradition of liaison with other
organizations through several activities in conjunction with the annual
meeting. SCAR is teaming up with the Radiological Society of North America for
the first in a series of courses aimed at practicing radiologists; hosting a
DICOM Enhanced CT-MR interoperability public demonstration in the exhibit
hall; and co-hosting a digital breast imaging forum with the Elizabeth Wende
Breast Clinic.
The meeting opens and closes with a look to the future: Physician
Astronaut Bernard Harris delivers the keynote address at the Opening General
Session and provides his unique perspective and insight on the future of
medical imaging technology. He will be available for questions at a press
conference at 12:00 noon on June 2. The Closing General Session will provide
SCAR experts' predictions on the future of imaging technology and radiology's
role.
"As SCAR celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Society embraces its past
but also looks to the future of imaging informatics. SCAR will continue to be
an innovator as this dynamic field evolves," says Bradley Erickson, MD, PhD,
Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and SCAR 2005 Program Committee chair.
