RICHMOND, Va., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Reserve Bank of
Richmond's Community Affairs Office will host a "Capitalizing on Community
Development Connections" forum in Asheville, N.C., on May 15, 2002. The public
forum will be held at the Doubletree Biltmore Hotel located at 115
Hendersonville Road.
During the day's events, the Fed's Community Affairs staff will present
its study findings, Community Investment Opportunities in the Asheville, North
Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Federal Reserve Research Officer Ray
Owens will provide an economic snapshot of the region and the nation. Regional
experts will lead a forum discussion on housing and economic opportunity for
low-income individuals and strategies on the topics of affordability and
development, job creation, and manufactured housing.
Forum highlights include:
* Constance Stancil, executive director of the North Carolina Low Income
Housing Coalition, will present Out of Reach: The Gap Between Housing
Cost and the Income of Poor People in the United States.
* Phil Black, executive director of People, Inc., will introduce a new
initiative to expand businesses and create higher wage jobs in
southwestern Virginia.
* Bernie Tetreault, president of Innovative Housing Strategies, will
speak on Maryland legislation requiring developers to build a
percentage of low-income housing in each development.
* Steve Zamaria, executive director at the Manufactured Housing
Institute, will lead a discussion on manufactured housing and address
its benefits.
* Dr. Julia Beamish and Dr. Rosemary Goss of the Virginia Polytechnic
Institute will present their study, Not a Trailer Anymore: Perceptions
of Manufactured Housing.
