Survey of Console Sports Gamers Provides Insight Into What Will Be Hot
This Year
SAN FRANCISCO, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- GameDAILY, the leading daily
newsletter for video game industry professionals, today announced the results
of a recent nationwide survey of sports video game buyers.
One of the most surprising results of the survey was that when asked,
"What is the main reason you buy a new version of your favorite sports game?"
endorsement by a professional athlete ranked lower (4%) than improved game
play (40%), improved graphics (37%) and updated rosters (19%).
"Console sports gamers will be looking for new levels of graphic quality
and depth of content in the new crop of sports titles," said Simon Tonner,
publisher of GameDAILY. "The popularity of the console sports games category
has made it a lucrative opportunity for publishers and developers of all
sizes. This survey indicates that a demand for something new exists amongst
game buyers and the door is still open for a new category leader."
The majority (52%) of sports gamers surveyed purchase 2-3 titles per year.
When asked, "What influences your decision to purchase a game?", respondents
listed trailers or demos (30%) as the #1 influence, with friends/word of mouth
(25%), reviews (17%), TV commercials (15%), online advertising (10%) trailing
behind.
When asked, "How often do you buy a new version of your favorite sports
game?", the majority of respondents answered every year (60%). Football (48%)
and Basketball (36%) still lead for favorite game category, but Extreme Sports
(34%) is quickly gaining ground, with Snowboarding (26%), Baseball (26%),
Hockey (23%) and Soccer (22%) trailing behind.
This is the latest in a series of surveys of the Gigex Network audience
commissioned by GameDAILY. The 2003 Console Sports Survey was conducted
online April 4-12, 2003, and is the result of 4,742 responses.
