LAS VEGAS, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Southwest Gas Corporation
(NYSE: SWX) Board of Directors announced the following management promotions
today: Jeffrey W. Shaw to chief executive officer (CEO), James P. Kane to
president, Thomas J Armstrong to senior vice president/Gas Resources & Energy
Services, Edward A. Janov to senior vice president/Finance, Christina A.
Palacios to senior vice president/Southern Arizona Division, and William Moody
to vice president/Gas Resources.

The announcement was made today by retiring CEO Michael O. Maffie at the
company's annual shareholders' meeting. Following a long and distinguished
career at Southwest Gas, Maffie announced that he would officially retire on
June 1. A 25-year employee, Maffie held the position of president for 15
years and C.E.O. for 11 years. He will continue to serve as a member of the
Board of Directors.
According to Thomas Y. Hartley, Board Chairman, "Mike has been
instrumental in guiding a company whose customer base has grown more than 50
percent during his tenure as CEO. He has built a strong organization at
Southwest Gas, and we thank him for all he has done for the company. We will
miss his leadership and experience and wish him well in retirement."
Shaw joined the company in 1988 as director/Internal Audit. Prior to his
recent promotion, he has served as company president, senior vice
president/Gas Resources and Pricing, senior vice president/Finance and
Treasurer, as well as the chief accounting officer.
Kane joined the company in 1984 as the manager of the Phoenix business
office when Southwest acquired the gas operations from Arizona Public Service
(APS). He was named Southern Arizona Division vice president in Tucson in
1993, senior vice president/Operations, moving to Corporate Headquarters in
Las Vegas in 1997, and executive vice president/Operations in 2000.
Armstrong joined the company in 1980 as a Production and Special Projects
engineer in the company's corporate office. He was subsequently promoted to
director of Production and Special Projects, manager/Gas Purchases, and
director/Gas Resource Management. He was named vice president/Gas Supply in
1993.
Janov joined the company in 1986 as a rate and regulatory specialist. He
was promoted to assistant controller in 1987, Controller in 1994, vice
president/Controller and Chief Accounting Officer in 1996, vice
president/Finance and Treasurer in 2002, and vice president/Finance in 2003.
Palacios joined the company in 1984 as the Human Resources manager in
Phoenix. She was named Southern Nevada Division vice president in 1995 and
Southern Arizona Division vice president in 1997.
Moody joined the company in 1979 as an accountant in Property Accounting
in Las Vegas. He held positions in Facilities and Resource Development,
Corporate Development, Customer Relations in the Southern Nevada and Central
Arizona Divisions. He was promoted to director of Gas Supply in 2002.
