ST. LOUIS, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Edison Brothers Stores Inc.
(Nasdaq: EDBR) today reported same-store sales of $69.3 million for April 1998
(the four weeks ended May 2). This is an increase of 8.5 percent, or $5.4
million, from same-store sales of $63.9 million in April 1997.
Total sales for April 1998 increased 2.1 percent to $71.6 million from
$70.1 million for the same period last year. Total sales figures reflect the
fact that Edison operated an average of 156 fewer stores during April 1998
than April 1997. April sales were positively affected as a result of the
Easter selling period falling in April this year vs. March in 1997.
Year-to-date same-store sales through April decreased 2.4 percent to
$198.6 million from $203.5 million for the same period last year. Total year-
to-date sales were $206.4 million, a decrease of 7.9 percent from sales of
$224.0 million in 1997.
