Industry Experts and Technical Content Emphasize the 'Freedom to Create' Using
Rational's Software Development Solution
LEXINGTON, Mass., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) today announced that registration for the
Rational User Conference 2002: "Freedom to Create," is now live on the
Rational Web site at http://www.rational.com/ruc.
The conference -- to be held August 18-22 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida --
will offer attendees technical insight and tactical expertise to better equip
the Rational Software development community with industry-proven tools,
services and best practices.
The Rational User Conference 2002 features more than 200 technical
sessions in 10 tracks addressing all stages of the development lifecycle.
Sessions will be led by Rational customers, engineers, industry experts and
partners -- including IBM, Microsoft and Sun.
Each presentation will focus on specific Rational solutions for each phase
in the lifecycle, as well as overarching industry best practices. Software
development professionals in all roles on a development team and who work
across all platforms and technologies -- including Java, .NET and embedded
development -- will gain valuable knowledge and strengthen their technical
skills at the conference, maximizing their ROI using Rational's tools and best
practices.
Attendees can extend the Rational User Conference learning experience by
attending pre- and post-conference Rational University training courses, by
participating in hands-on workshops featuring Rational Suite(R) solutions and
the recently announced Rational(R) XDE(TM) product line, or by utilizing the
Rational Developer Network(SM) (http://www.rational.net), where more track-specific
technical information and feature articles will be available after the
conference.
As in years past, an exhibit hall will showcase solutions and technology
from Rational partners. Rational thought leaders and engineers will be
available for consultation in the Rational Solution Center.
Rational CEO Mike Devlin will deliver the opening keynote, "Freedom to
Create: Developing Imagination Into Innovation." Rational President Tom Bogan
will host the industry keynote, "Creating Customer Success," featuring
Rational customers demonstrating their success using Rational solutions.
Grady Booch, Rational's chief scientist, will host the third keynote,
"Manifesting Creativity" featuring Denny Dent, the world's only "rock 'n roll"
painter. Booch, one of the co-creators of the Unified Modeling Language, will
emphasize software ingenuity. Dent, painting on oversized canvases, will
illustrate the importance of trust, integrity, power, and precision in
fostering the creative process.
"I've really enjoyed the Rational User Conference. It's been a huge
benefit to me individually and also to the members of my group," said Judy
Macaluso, Development Systems Manager for Aspen Tech. "We brought several
people last year, including junior members who are new to Rational, and it has
really been a great experience for them to come and see how to use the tools,
to talk to with other people who are using the tools to overcome similar
problems, and to get them excited to go back and build great software."
"The Rational User Conference offers attendees access to the extensive
Rational community of software development leaders who provide practical
insight into how to leverage resources to achieve results," said Eric Schurr,
senior vice president of marketing, Rational Software. "It's a chance for
people to hear from thought leaders from Rational and from their peers around
the world."

productivity of developers. Through best practice examples, Booch will
show how to mitigate this friction -- in particular, architecture,
patterns, reusable assets and the role of agile methods.
-- "Lessons Learned from Customers Implementing Rational Unified
Process(R)" -- Presented by Philippe Kruchten, Rational Fellow and
director of process development, this track will highlight the results
collected from more than a dozen companies who have implemented the
Rational Unified Process (RUP)(R) in different markets and in different
organizations.
-- "How Light Does My Process Need To Be -- Viewpoints From The
Experts" -- Industry and process methodologists Craig Larman and Robert
Martin and Rational thought leaders Philippe Kruchten and Gary Pollice
will discuss lightweight, or agile, processes and present valuable
insights to many different process implementation situations.
-- "Use Case Showdown: Panel Discussion Among Use-Case Gurus" -- Ivar
Jacobson and a host of other use-case gurus will discuss the correct
purpose, content, length and format of use cases. This panel
discussion will benefit conference attendees by providing a full range
of expert opinions allowing them to better understand and write use
cases.
-- "How to Break Software Security," -- James Whittaker, Professor at
Florida Tech University, will discuss the core tools and technologies
that make software testers more effective at finding software security
vulnerabilities, making them more informed and effective testers.
-- "Principles of Software Testing," -- Led by testing guru Cem Kaner,
from the University of Florida, this track will be offered during pre-
conference training. Kaner will also be co-presenting, "Developing
Your Testing Approach: A Context-Driven Analysis," with James Bach in
