American Eagle Outfitters Reports April Total Sales Increase of 0.7%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced that total
sales for the four-week period ended May 4, 2002 increased 0.7% to
$89.4 million, compared to $88.7 million for the four-week period ended May 5,
2001.  Total sales for the period include $5.8 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $7.0 million for the corresponding
period last year.
    Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
13.5% for the April period.  Consolidated comparable store sales, which
include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 14.1% for the
month compared to the corresponding period ended May 5, 2001.
Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 21.0% in April compared to
last year.
    Total sales for the thirteen-week period ended May 4, 2002 increased 10.5%
to $277.9 million, compared to $251.5 million for the thirteen-week period
ended May 5, 2001.  Total sales for the period include $17.5 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $20.4 million for the corresponding
period last year.
    Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
5.0% for the thirteen-week period ended May 4, 2002.  Consolidated comparable
store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores,
decreased 6.1% for the thirteen-week period compared to the corresponding
period last year.  Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 17.5%
for the period compared to the corresponding period last year.
