NOEL, Mo., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) has honored a Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) plant for
environmental excellence, company officials reported today.
Tyson's Noel, Missouri, poultry complex recently received an Honorable
Mention Award as part of a U.S. EPA Region 7 program called Pollution
Prevention for Environmental Excellence. The plant was recently honored at
an EPA ceremony in Kansas City.
Tyson's Noel plant earned the award for its water conservation and
waste recovery efforts. The plant has reduced its water usage by
approximately 17% in each of the past four years through conservation
measures and a water recycling process. In fact, the plant's use of water
from the Ozark Aquifer was reduced by more than 180 million gallons in
2005. In addition, these conservation measures are also generating a cost
savings for the company. The Noel facility has also reduced the volume of
material going into its wastewater treatment system by installing new
equipment designed to recover usable animal fat.
Because of the success of these initiatives, EPA acknowledged Tyson
Foods as "a solid example of leadership in the field of environmental
excellence."
"We're proud of the environmental efforts of our team at Noel and are
pleased their work has been recognized by the EPA," said Kevin Igli, senior
vice president of Environmental, Health and Safety for Tyson Foods. "This
achievement is consistent with our own environmental excellence goals,
which emphasize pollution prevention, conservation, recycling and
operational efficiency."
Tyson Foods employs more 300 environmental managers and support staff
across the country. At the company's Noel complex, this includes two
environmental managers, as well as a dozen environmental support workers.
The Noel complex employs more than 1,100 people.
