WASHINGTON, May 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi
issued the following statement today on the devastating cyclone in Burma
this weekend, in which nearly 4,000 people were killed and tens of
thousands are missing:
"The thoughts of the world are with the people of Burma as they
struggle to recover from the catastrophic cyclone this weekend. It is our
hope that the worst in Mother Nature can bring out the best in human
nature.
"I am concerned with the reported slow response by the military regime
to help the Burmese people during this critical time. The regime must show
leadership to provide for the basic survival needs of the Burmese people.
The United States and international organizations are moving rapidly to
provide assistance to those suffering but a stronger international effort
is needed. Congress will work closely with the Administration to ensure
that we are providing the necessary assistance to help the people of Burma
in their time of need.
"Tragedies such as this one remind us of our shared humanity - and that
tragedy anywhere affects us all."
