American Eagle Outfitters Reports Record April Total Sales of $88.7 Million, An Increase of 53.6%; April U.S. Same Store Sales Increased 22.7%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., May 9 /PRNewswire/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced total sales for
the four weeks ended May 5, 2001 increased 53.6% to $88.7 million from
$57.8 million for the period ended April 29, 2000.  Total sales for the four
weeks ended May 5, 2001 include $7.0 million from the Thriftys/Bluenotes
operation.  U.S. same store sales for the four weeks ended May 5, 2001
increased 22.7% compared to the corresponding four-week period ended May 6,
2000.
    Total sales for the quarter ended May 5, 2001 increased 41.3% to
$251.6 million from $178.0 million for the quarter ended April 29, 2000.
Total sales for the quarter include $20.4 million from the Thriftys/Bluenotes
operation.  U.S. same store sales for the 2001 period rose 8.2% compared to
the corresponding quarter last year.
