"The availability of gaming-capable handsets and compelling content has
increased interest in mobile gaming among wireless subscribers," said Schelley
Olhava, IDC. "We estimate that more than 24 million individuals in the U.S.
will download at least one wireless game this year."
"In 2002, Sprint announced its strategy to lead in the mobile-gaming
market. Last year, we announced more than 120 titles and 17 partners, proving
our success to that point," said Jeff Hallock, vice president of consumer
product marketing for Sprint. "In 2003, Sprint had more than 5 million game
purchases. We're on track to exceed that number this year with more than
3.5 million purchases in the first 4 months and the promise of more
innovations to come in the form of 3D games."
Earlier this year, Sprint announced the Game Lobby by Sprint, powered by
M7 Networks, a centralized community for mobile gamers to meet and compete.
Since launching the service on March 1, 2004, more than 70,000 customers have
joined, with thousands more signing up every week. Planned future enhancements
include tournament play, chat features and the ability to win prizes.
In conjunction with Sanyo and Bandai, Sprint will demonstrate 3D games at
E3. 3D games improve the user experience with enhanced graphics. Sprint
expects to launch 3D games nationwide later this summer.
