Raytheon Wins NASA's George M. Low Award for Quality

RESTON, Va., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Technical Services Company
(RTSC), a subsidiary of Raytheon Company, has been awarded the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) highest honor for excellence and
quality. NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin presented Raytheon with the 2001
George M. Low Award in the large-business service category. The award,
presented at the 16th Annual NASA Continual Improvement and Reinvention
Conference on Quality Management in Alexandria, Va., is the nation's oldest
award for organizational quality.
RTSC's Information Technology and Scientific Services unit was selected
from a field of top-performing NASA contractors for the annual award, which
has been bestowed annually by NASA since 1985 and is named for George M. Low,
former deputy administrator of NASA during the early development of the Space
Shuttle. "These companies ... meet and exceeded the challenge of continuous,
quality customer service and innovative management. Their commitment and
leadership have been invaluable to NASA and the nation's industries," said
Goldin. Raytheon's award was based on nominations from three NASA centers:
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., Ames Research Center in
Mountain View, Calif., and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
"The Low Award is a great honor, and it is a true mark of distinction for
Raytheon Technical Services Company to be recognized by NASA in this way,"
said Phil LePore, a vice president of Raytheon Company and chairman and chief
executive officer of Raytheon Technical Services Company. "We are especially
pleased to be the first contractor ever to be nominated by more than two
centers in the same year. The three nominations demonstrate the fact that our
employees are exemplifying the principles of Raytheon Six Sigma by focusing
their improvement efforts on increasing the value we provide to our
customers."
The Low Award honors companies that best exemplify NASA's ideals for
quality and productivity. Finalists were evaluated according to several
categories, including: customer satisfaction and technical performance,
schedule and cost performance, responsiveness to NASA's strategic goals,
leadership and continuous improvement, management innovation, and
technological breakthroughs. The Low Award corresponds with the Malcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award criteria used to evaluate organizational
achievements in quality management.
"The Low Award is a tribute to the abilities and dedication of our
employees, to the cooperative spirit we share with our NASA customers, and to
the processes and systems that enable us to meet a broad range of needs across
the NASA landscape," said Dr. Ashok Kaveeshwar, vice president, Raytheon
Technical Services Company, and general manager, Information Technology and
Scientific Services. "I am proud every day of what we achieve at Raytheon, but
I am especially proud today of receiving special recognition from our
customers."
In 1999, Raytheon was presented with NASA's Low Award for performance,
inventory reduction and cost savings achieved on the NASA Logistics contract
in Annapolis Junction, Md.
A provider of space and earth science, engineering, and information
technology services, Raytheon is present in much of the NASA technical and
geographical landscape. It has supported Goddard for 28 years and has worked
with both Ames and JPL since 1998. Raytheon also supports Marshall Space
Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and Goddard's flight facility at Wallops
