CAMBRIDGE, Mass., and SAN DIEGO, May 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ Biogen Idec
Inc. (Nasdaq: BIIB) announced today that Nabil Hanna, Ph.D., Executive Vice
President, Research, has resigned from the company. The company said that
William Rastetter, Ph.D., Executive Chairman, and Michael Gilman, Ph.D.,
Senior Vice President of Research, will assume the responsibilities formerly
held by Dr. Hanna.

In response to an informal SEC inquiry relating to the trading of the
securities of a third party, Biogen Idec conducted its own internal
investigation. Dr. Hanna's resignation followed that internal review. Biogen
Idec is not a target of the SEC inquiry.
Dr. Rastetter was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IDEC prior to
the merger with Biogen in November 2003. He served as President and Chief
Executive Officer of IDEC from December 1986 until January 2002.
Dr. Gilman was Senior Vice President, Research at Biogen prior to the
merger. He joined the company in 1999 after having served as Executive Vice
President and Chief Scientific Officer at ARIAD Pharmaceuticals. Before
joining that company in 1994, he spent eight years on the scientific staff of
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, where his research focused on
mechanisms of signal transduction and gene regulation. Dr. Gilman holds a
Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley, and a S.B. in
Life Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
