NEW YORK, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Concern Worldwide has
launched an emergency appeal for victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and
is warning that thousands of people may still be at risk one week after the
storm struck. About 1.5 million people have been affected by the disaster
and the true scale of the devastation is still emerging as much of the
country remains inaccessible.
"The longer people have to wait for aid to arrive, the bigger the risk
that many more will die, particularly the most vulnerable such as the
elderly, young children and those who were already living in extreme
poverty," said Paul O'Brien, Overseas Director for Concern Worldwide.
Concern Worldwide will be working through international partners who
already have staff on the ground. Concern expects the most urgent needs of
the affected population will include drinking water, food and shelter.
Concern's Emergency Response Team, along with staff from India and
Bangladesh, are ready to deploy once the critical needs have been.
