Michael A. Sandler, MD, Installed as President of Michigan State Medical Society

    EAST LANSING, Mich., May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michael A.
Sandler, MD, a West Bloomfield diagnostic radiologist, was installed as
president of the 15,000 member Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) during
the 143rd annual meeting of the MSMS House of Delegates on May 3 in
Dearborn.

A graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Doctor
Sandler is senior staff in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Henry
Ford Hospital and currently serves on the Michigan Radiological Society
board of directors.

During his year as MSMS president, Doctor Sandler will focus on public
health issues including smoking cessation, preventive health and school
nutrition, among others. Insurance coverage for the uninsured and the
pending physician shortage also will be priorities. To address these and
other issues, Doctor Sandler plans to encourage physicians and patients to
become involved in the political process.

"If we allow our political foundation to crumble, then the blame goes
not on the politicians, but on the owners of the system, including you and
me," Doctor Sandler noted in his inaugural speech to 350 physicians and
guests. "The system works only when we participate, stay organized, support
our message, and elect our candidates."

Doctor Sandler is a member of the MSMS Committee on State Legislation
and Regulations and serves on the state of Michigan's Certificate of Need
Commission. He is a past chair of both the MSMS Board of Directors and the
Michigan Doctors' Political Action Committee. He also serves on the
Michigan Delegation to the American Medical Association and is a member of
the AMA's political action committee board.

Doctor Sandler has been involved in many aspects of the Henry Ford
Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Department. He served on the
Education/Resident Selection Committee for 15 years and was voted Teacher
of the Year. Doctor Sandler initiated a Fellowship in Cross Sectional
Imaging in 1984. During his 22 years as its Director, more than 80 fellows
completed the program. He also served as vice chair and was twice interim
chair of the Radiology Department and is the author or co-author of 60
papers and 22 exhibits. Henry Ford Medical Group recently presented him
with a Special Recognition Award and a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Doctor Sandler also has been active within his specialty. He has been
the president of the American Society of Clinic Radiologists and the
Michigan Radiological Society. Doctor Sandler has been awarded Fellowship
in the American College of Radiology, the Society of Radiologists in
Ultrasound, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine as well as
being an oral examiner in ultrasound for the American Board of Radiology.

The Michigan State Medical Society is the statewide professional
association of 15,000 medical doctors in Michigan affiliated with the
American Medical Association. Physician policies on various issues
involving public health, health care delivery and medical ethics are set at
the annual MSMS House of Delegates meeting.
