InterSense Delivers Tracking Technology to Quantum3D for Man-Wearable Expedition(TM) Embedded Training Platform

Quantum3D Chooses InterSense's Patented InertiaCubes for Head, Weapon and Body
Tracking with the Un-Tethered Expedition Mission Training System

BEDFORD, Mass., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- InterSense, Inc., a market leader
in inertial-based, simulation and training tracking technology, is providing
three tracking sensors for Quantum3D's new COTS, Man-Wearable, Embedded
Training Platform. The Expedition(TM) is the first integrated, open-
architecture, platform designed to host training software for infantry
synthetic environment embedded training applications. Two InterSense
InertiaCube2 orientation sensors provide the soldier's head and body
positions, which enables realistic visual feedback to be sent to the soldier's
Helmet Mounted Display (HMD). A third sensor, the Wireless InertiaCube3, is
mounted in a training weapon and sends the weapon's orientation and input
controls back to Quantum3D's man-wearable THERMITE(TM) computer via a wireless
interface.
InterSense engineers worked closely with Quantum3D to integrate the
InertiaCube2 sensors directly into the Expedition platform and the THERMITE
Tactical Visual Computer. This sensor integration enables the user to control
the viewpoint of the synthetic environment by turning their head and body,
kneeling, standing, or lying flat. To navigate through the synthetic
environment, commands from a weapon-mounted, thumb-operated joystick
controller, along with the weapon's orientation, are sent via the Wireless
InertiaCube3 interface to the Expedition processing sub-system where Quantum3D
software integrates the data and renders the visual scene via the THERMITE's
graphics engine.
"InterSense's combination of inertial orientation tracking and wireless
technology was a great starting point for the development requirements of the
Expedition," states Jamey Dobbins, Quantum3D's Expedition Product Manager.
"InterSense's software libraries seamlessly integrated with the THERMITE's
Windows operating system providing a uniform, reliable interface for all three
InertiaCubes that are part of the Expedition."
"The Expedition is a great first example of a new class of mobile
simulation systems that have been developing over the last few years," states
Eric Foxlin, InterSense's Founder and Chief Technology Officer. "Our low
power, wireless, wearable inertial sensors were designed to meet the demanding
requirements of mobile training platforms and have found a perfect match with
Quantum3D's Expedition."
InterSense's patented InertiaCube(TM) products are an enabling technology
used in simulation, situational awareness and mission training systems,
biomechanics, robotics, and immersive display applications. With over 5000
sensors deployed worldwide, the InertiaCube product family offers reliable and
accurate orientation tracking for the most demanding applications.
See the Expedition in action at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, CA from May
18th to the 20th at the U.S. Army's Booth 1608 and in front of the South Hall
of the LA Convention Center.

InterSense Inc., founded in 1996, is the market leader in miniaturized,
