Chapter Accepting Donations for International, National and Local Disaster
Relief
DETROIT, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Red Cross is currently
responding to recent catastrophic events worldwide, including the
earthquake in China's Sichuan Province and Cyclone Nagris in Myanmar, in
the form of financial resources, relief supplies, and trained response
workers if and when needed.
The American Red Cross is currently working closely with the Red Cross
Societies in China and in Myanmar to assess needs and determine the most
effective course of action. The Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the
American Red Cross is prepared to receive donations in support of these
efforts, as well as deploy trained disaster relief efforts both nationally
and internationally if need be.
"The situations in China and Myanmar are beyond devastating," said Jim
Laverty, CEO of the Southeastern Michigan Chapter. "As we are doing
everything we can to provide help, we ask metro Detroiters to remember that
the Southeastern Michigan Chapter responds to 4-6 home fires and other
disasters per day right here at home. We are grateful for the support shown
once again by southeast Michigan. Please designate a portion of donations
to local disaster relief efforts so that your local Red Cross can continue
to provide needed support to residents of southeast Michigan as well as
victims of disasters nationally and internationally."
In addition to national and international response, the Southeastern
Michigan Chapter has locally responded in May alone to 57 single-family
home fires and serviced 53 families with temporary food, clothing, shelter
and mental health support.
Upon receiving donations intended for China and Myanmar relief efforts,
the Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan will forward them on to the national
American Red Cross, who will in turn distribute the donations overseas. The
American Red Cross always honors donor intent and asks that contributions
for specific disasters be designated at the time of donation. Residents of
