FPL Energy Announces 110-Megawatt Wind Farm in Kansas to Sell Electricity Output to UtiliCorp

    JUNO BEACH, Fla., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of
FPL Group (NYSE: FPL), today announced it will build, own and operate the
largest wind project in Kansas and will sell the electricity output to
UtiliCorp United (NYSE: UCU) under a multi-year contract.
    FPL Energy will construct 170 wind turbines at a site in Gray County,
approximately three miles east of Montezuma in southwestern Kansas.  The
turbines will have a generating capacity of 110 megawatts, providing enough
electricity to power approximately 33,000 homes in Kansas and Missouri.
    Construction of the project will begin this spring and is expected to be
completed by the end of 2001.

    FPL Energy currently operates wind farms in Iowa, Texas, Minnesota, Oregon
and California, with nearly 1,000 megawatts of capacity and a net ownership of
approximately 600 megawatts.  The company has announced wind projects that
will add approximately 870 additional megawatts to its portfolio by the end of
2001.
