The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation to Donate $10,000 to Make Field of Dreams Come True for Inner-City Youth

Donation to Benefit the Watts Friendship Sports League Youth Baseball Program

    LOS ANGELES, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation
announced it will donate $10,000 to help fund the Watts Friendship Sports
League's summer youth baseball program.
Representatives of The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation will present the
$10,000 donation and throw out the first pitch at the Watts Friendship Sports
League's Opening Day ceremonies on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at the 109th
Street Recreation Center Park at 1464 South 109th Street in Los Angeles.
The donation will help pay for uniforms and equipment for boys and girls
participating in WFSL youth baseball programs at the Algin Sutton, Green
Meadows, Jordan Downs, William Nickerson and 109th Street Recreation Centers
in south Los Angeles. The WFSL is sponsored by the City of Los Angeles'
Department of Recreation and Parks South District.
"Our donation to the Watts Friendship League is just one part of our
ongoing commitment to the community and its young people," said Dave Hirz,
vice president of The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation and president of Food 4
Less Stores. "We support the Watts Friendship Sports League's mission of
providing children with a fun and positive experience, and can think of no
better way to fulfill that mission than by sponsoring the WSFL's baseball
program so that every child that wishes to play can experience America's
favorite pastime."
This marks the eighth consecutive year that The Ralphs/Food 4 Less
Foundation has helped underwrite the WFSL's youth baseball program. Since The
Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation began supporting the WFSL, more than 2,000 boys
and girls in south Los Angeles have been given the opportunity to play
organized baseball.
"The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation has been a great friend of the Watts
Friendship Sports League," said Chuck Chavoor, recreation supervisor for the
Department of Recreation and Parks' South District. "Ralphs and Food 4 Less
have provided us with the funding needed to bring baseball and hope to
thousands of children in south Los Angeles. The Watts Friendship Sports
League would not be possible without the support and dedication of caring
organizations, such as Ralphs and Food 4 Less."
The WFSL was founded in 1989, and is a collaborative effort between City
of Los Angeles' Department of Recreation and Parks, community organizations
and corporate sponsors. Watts Friendship Sports League programs provide
recreational and social outlets for the youth of south Los Angeles through
basketball, soccer, baseball, track and dance activities. More than
5,000 boys and girls participate in Watts Friendship Sports League activities
annually.

The Ralphs/Food 4 Less Foundation was established in 1991 by Ralphs
Grocery Company to fulfill the supermarket company's commitment to giving back
to the communities it serves. The Foundation has assisted hundreds of
nonprofit organizations, schools and community groups from San Diego to
Sacramento with grants in excess of $20 million. Thousands of people have
benefited as a result of this support.

contributing to the diverse communities they serve. Last year, Ralphs and
Food 4 Less provided more than $5 million in cash and in-kind donations to
organizations focused on health, education, the fight against hunger and
developing our youth.
