Aware's Comprehensive Suite of Software Provides Key Functionality for
e-Passport Enrollment, Personalization, and Reader Systems
BEDFORD, Mass., May 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Aware, Inc. (Nasdaq:
AWRE), a global provider of imaging and biometrics software, today announced
that it will demonstrate its comprehensive suite of biometrics software tools
in its booth at the Electronic Passport Forum, held May 18-19, 2005 in Berlin,
Germany. The software is designed specifically for e-passport enrollment,
personalization, and reader systems, providing key functionality such as face
and fingerprint image analysis and optimization, image compression, file
formatting, and robust file transport. Together, these tools help integrators
and system developers ensure the quality, interoperability, and standards-
compliance of their solutions.
Aware's PreFace(TM) software performs facial image analysis and
optimization to help ensure compliance with ISO/IEC biometric facial image
standards. Aware's ICAOPack(TM) provides several tools required for e-
passport systems, such as software to read, write, edit, and validate
biometric files according to the ICAO LDS e-passport standard and all relevant
ISO/IEC biometric data interchange standards, including CBEFF. ICAOPack also
includes JPEG2000 and JPEG for facial image compression, and WSQ for
fingerprint image compression, as well as Aware's QualityCheck software for
fingerprint image quality scoring. ICAOPack also provides for passive
authentication in compliance with the ICAO PKI specification. Aware's
Biometric Store and Forward, or "BSF", can be used to robustly transport
biometric files between disparate locations and systems.
"Worldwide deployment of e-passport systems is a significant challenge on
several fronts, with image quality control and data interchange being
particularly daunting," commented David Benini, director of product marketing
at Aware. "Aware has applied its extensive experience and deep expertise in
the creation and exchange of biometric data to the task, providing integrators
and system developers with an array of robust yet flexible software tools that
together satisfy a broad range of important requirements."
ICAO, the UN body responsible for specifying passports, has developed
standards for the "e-passport", which includes a memory chip that can securely
store biometric images and data. U.S. law currently requires countries that
participate in the visa waiver program to begin issuance of ICAO-compliant e-
passports to its citizens by October 2005.
