MARLBORO, Mass., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA; RTNB) has been awarded a $26 million delivery order from the U.S.
Air Force's Electronic Systems Center, Hanscom AFB, Mass., for production of
the first 11 AN/GPN-30 terminal area air traffic control radar systems also
known as the ASR-11. The order includes two systems for the Air Force and
nine systems for the U.S. Navy. Deliveries of the new radars will start
October 2001.
This production order is a result of the positive Department of Defense
(DoD) Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) decision last February for the
AN/GPN-30 and is based on the successful completion of development
testing/operational testing at Eglin AFB, Fla.
"This initial order truly sets into motion the start of terminal area
radar modernization for the DoD," said Bob Eckel, Raytheon's vice president
and director of domestic air traffic control programs. "The ASR-11/AN/GPN-30
will provide both the DoD and FAA with a modern, reliable, fully qualified
solid-state radar system with significantly reduced ownership costs."
The ASR-11/AN/GPN-30 DASR is a modern, solid-state airport surveillance
radar with primary surveillance coverage to 60 nautical miles and secondary
surveillance coverage to 120 nautical miles. It provides improved detection
in clutter and weather, detection of six levels of weather, improved
reliability and low life cycle costs. As a joint procurement of the DoD and
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the DoD and FAA plan to procure up
to 213 ASR-11s. Raytheon is currently completing testing of the FAA ASR-11 at
Stockton, Calif., and the FAA is scheduled to make a production decision for
the ASR-11 this summer. The ASR-11/AN/GPN-30 replaces aging AN/GPN-12/20/27
and ASR-7/8 air traffic control radars at military and civilian airports.
