CONCORD, Mass., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Starmet Commercial Castings, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Starmet Corporation (Nasdaq: STMT) announced today
its delivery of the 6,000th Beralcast(R) production precision investment
casting to a leading manufacturer of production assembly equipment. "This
application continues to be the single largest production order for Starmet's
patented Beralcast(R)-363 metal matrix composite (MMC) to date", reports
company president, Kevin Raftery. The delivery rate of this component has
doubled over the last three months while Starmet continues to expand the use
of the Beralcast(R) technology into next generation equipment designs.
Starmet has begun delivering prototype volumes of Beralcast(R) 363 alloys
on different cast components for next generation production assembly
equipment. Starmet presently expects that the next generation equipment would
enter production early next year resulting in a more than four-fold increase
in casting demand. Starmet's Beralcast(R)-363 MMC alloy was selected because
it was 22% lighter, 300% stiffer and 6-10 times more effective in vibrational
damping than traditional aluminum casting alloys. In addition, the company
has also delivered prototype quantities of its recently introduced lower cost
casting alloys identified as Beralcast(R)-363L and Beralcast(R)-363HD.
Customers are evaluating material performance for their lower cost, higher
volume applications. Depending upon component geometry and procurement
volumes, customers can expect cost savings of between 10% and 40% when
compared with the basic Beralcast(R)-363 alloy.
Over the past seven years, the company has produced and delivered over
four hundred different casting configurations to approximately 30 military and
10 commercial customers supporting their prototype and pre-production
development programs. Beralcast(R), a precision cast beryllium aluminum MMC
material, was originally developed for space and defense applications. In
1994, Lockheed Martin and the US Army selected Beralcast(R) for use on the
RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter Electro-Optic Support Sensor (EOSS) system.
Starmet Commercial Castings is a manufacturer of advanced composite
materials supporting electronic, data storage, medical, sport and motion
control applications utilizing precision casting and extrusion technologies.
Starmet Aerocast manufactures advanced composite materials supporting space,
defense and military applications.
