NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sovereign Bank today
announced that Frank Besignano, who heads the bank's Staten Island
division, will now manage all of Sovereign's New York retail banking
activities. As New York Community Banking Market President he will oversee
Sovereign's 75 community banking offices in New York City and on Long
Island, including the bank's 20 SI Bank & Trust offices.
Besignano has 25 years of community banking experience. He began his
career as a branch manager at the former Staten Island Savings Bank and
steadily took on increased responsibilities that included banking services,
marketing, compliance and business development. He became responsible for
all retail banking activities in 2004 when the Staten Island bank became
the SI Bank & Trust Division of Independence Community Bank that year.
Besignano joined Sovereign's leadership when the bank acquired Independence
in 2006.
Besignano, of Staten Island, has often been recognized for his public
service activities. He received the YMCA's Distinguished Community Service
Award and the Good Scout and Silver Beaver Awards from the Boy Scouts of
America. He was inducted into the Wagner College DaVinci Society in 2006.
Besignano is a trustee or board member of Staten Island University
Hospital, the Visiting Nurse Association of Staten Island and the March of
Dimes.
A graduate of Baruch College, Besignano received specialized education
at the University of Colorado School of Bank Marketing and the National
School of Banking at Fairfield University.
